British Water Ski and Wakeboard

The Job

1st4sport Qualifications was approached by the national governing body for water skiing in Great Britain, British Water Ski & Wakeboard, to develop a Level 2 coaching qualification, gain national recognition onto the Qualifications and Credit Framework (QCF), and support BWSW’s aspiration to achieve the UK Coaching Certificate (UKCC).

The Solution

1st4sport Qualifications formed a close working partnership with British Water Ski & Wakeboard to begin the development of a qualification based on the National Occupational Standards and common units for coaching at Level 2, developed by SkillsActive (the Sector Skills Council for Active Leisure, Learning and Well-being). As part of the development process, 1st4sport worked with BWSW to develop a full and comprehensive learner portfolio containing learning and assessment materials specific to water skiing and wakeboarding.

The Results/Benefits

On 1 July 2010, the 1st4sport Level 2 Certificate in Coaching Water Skiing/Wakeboarding (QCF) was accredited onto the QCF– just months into the partnership with 1st4sport Qualifications – and at the first submission, justifying BWSW’s decision to work with 1st4sport; benefitting from 1st4sport’s experience in successfully working in similar partnerships with over 30 national governing bodies of sport and gaining QCF recognition for more than 100 qualifications.

With the help of 1st4sport to support and complement the needs of the qualification, comprehensive learning and assessment resources were developed, including the Level 2 WSWB Coach Handbook.

Once developed and accredited, all of the components of the qualification were submitted for UKCC endorsement. By working with 1st4sport, BWSW were able to address many UKCC criteria by default and could therefore be confident their newly developed qualification would be successful in achieving this much-needed endorsement.

BWSW benefited from our close working relationships within the industry and now have a more comprehensive Level 2 qualification on the QCF. The qualification gained UKCC endorsement and is considered to be an exemplar submission.

But that’s not all. By working with 1st4sport, BWSW was able to take advantage of more than just our qualification expertise.

To ensure BWSW coach educators were up-skilled and adequately prepared to deliver their new coach education programme, they were able to train and qualify their coach educators through the achievement of nationally recognised qualifications in the areas of tutoring and assessing delivered by Coachwise Learning.

What the Client Says

“The new Level 2 Water Ski & Wakeboard coach qualification professionalises the coaching skiers and riders will receive from BWSW coaches. It offers the opportunities for progression as a coach and for skills to be recognised on a national basis alongside other sports and in the wider education sector. I have no hesitation in recommending 1st4sport Qualifications. Their experience in developing and awarding coaching qualifications is second to none and was a key factor in enabling us to achieve UKCC endorsement at the first time of asking. The development process went well and BWSW will look to develop Level 3 qualifications with 1st4sport in both waterskiing and wakeboarding in the future, as a result of this experience.”
