Working in partnership with Evolve Education
1st4sport helped Evolve Education to deliver a holistic qualification for their mentors to ensure PE and school sport is high quality, inclusive and consists of safe practice.
Evolve Education, based in the West Midlands, is a training provider that supports the work of Evolve: A Social Impact Company. Evolve addresses some of the key challenges that face our society today, including inactivity and obesity, low aspirations, poor educational attainment and high levels of youth unemployment.
Evolve Education deploys health mentors in primary schools across the country. One of their roles is to support class teachers to deliver PE and School Sport, leaving them better equipped to teach the subject.
John Bishop, Director at Evolve Education, wanted a holistic qualification for his mentors that would help them to ensure PE and school sport in the schools they are working in is high quality, inclusive and consists of safe practice.
Why 1st4sport Qualifications works for Evolve Education
John chose to deliver the 1st4sport Level 2 Certificate in Supporting Learning in Physical Education and School Sport (QCF), (unique to 1st4sport Qualifications), as he felt it would enhance his health mentors’ skills as they support non-specialist teachers to deliver their PE lessons. He thinks that this qualification is long-overdue and that there is a growing market for it.
John has found the supporting resources from 1st4sport Qualifications to be of a high quality, particularly the portfolio, which is very presentable and adds credibility to the students’ learning.
Evolve Education currently has 35 students finishing their 130 hours of guided learning on the 1st4sport Level 2 Certificate in Supporting Learning in Physical Education and School Sport (QCF). It is expected that the pass rate will be 100% and the feedback from the students is that they appreciate the fact that the Certificate is upskilling them, and that the work they do is being validated. As John explains: ‘Some other qualifications are very much geared to working in the community rather than in schools, and focus largely on the technical aspects of teaching. This Certificate focuses on the whole child and how their achievements in PE and school sport can benefit their performance in the rest of the curriculum. It very much fills a gap in the market.’
‘I recommend this qualification to other providers. It helps students to bridge the gap between their delivery and teaching, and adds value to the input that our mentors have with their learners. 1st4sport Qualifications has ensured the syllabus is holistic and includes content that is often overlooked by other qualifications.’
