 This qualification is equivalent to Level 1 on the European Qualifications Framework (EQF)*.

Developed in partnership with the British Racing Authority (BHA) the 1st4sport Entry Level Award in Basic Knowledge of the Horseracing Industry (Entry 3) is designed to deliver an introduction to the horseracing industry to people who have an interest in horseracing and may want to work within it but who have little previous knowledge or experience.

Learners are required to:

  • have been accurately identified*
  • able to communicate effectively in English (listening, speaking, reading and writing).

NB. It is recommended that potential learners have an interest in the area and/or some experience to ensure that this is the correct qualification for them.

* The identify check must be completed in the course induction

To qualify for the 1st4sport Entry Level Award in Basic Knowledge of the Horseracing Industry (Entry 3), learners must successfully achieve a minimum of three credits, completing three of the six listed units.

Learners may choose to complete all three units at Entry Level or they may substitute one Entry Level unit with a similar unit at Level 1. Learners may not complete both Entry Level and Level 1 units with similar content eg learners may not choose Know basic facts about the history and identification of the Thoroughbred and Know the basic history of the Thoroughbred and horseracing. Unit choice would need to be discussed and agreed with the Centre before registering the learner for the qualification with 1st4sport.

For recognised centres and tutors, the qualification is supported by the following resources:

  • generic administrative guidance and tools for recognised centres
  • Qualification Specification outlining the requirements of delivering and assessing the qualification

Fees are charged per learner and provide registration and certification for the qualification, as well as a 1st4sport certificate. Centre recognition, qualification approval and annual centre fees may also be applicable.
