1st4sport Level 3 Certificate in Supporting Physical Development and Physical Activity in the Early Years (QCF)

The 1st4sport Level 3 Certificate in Supporting Physical Development and Physical Activity in the Early Years has been developed in partnership with the Association for Physical Education (afPE) and is supported by employers and the industry. The 1st4Sport Level 3 Certificate in Supporting Physical Development and Physical Activity in the Early Years has been designed to help up-skill the early-years workforce in the area of physical development for children aged 0-5, as well as to develop a lasting appreciation for healthy living and physical activity in both children and parents/guardians. This qualification has been designed to develop the skills and knowledge required to enable you to better understand the characteristics of physical development in the early years, and to deliver purposeful physical activities that support a child’s physical development in the early years.

The qualification comprises eight units of assessment. Upon successful completion of the qualification you will be awarded 19 credits. 100% of the learning that you will receive will support you in being able to plan, deliver and review independent, purposeful physical activities in a suitable early years environment. During your achievement of the qualification you will undertake learning and assessment to enable you to:

  • understand the principles of physical development and early movement skills
  • understand the principles of safe practice in an early years environment
  • be able to promote healthy living and well-being to children aged 0-5, as well as parents/guardians of children aged 0-5
  • be able to plan, deliver and review physical activity sessions linked to a particular area of physical development
  • be able to assess and observe children in an early years environment against expected development patterns

The qualification is designed for if you already work, or aspire to work, in an early years setting, such as a nursery, crèche or primary school. The qualification may also help support you if you plan to become, or are already, an au-pair or child minder.    

To access the 1st4Sport Level 3 Certificate in Supporting Physical Development and Physical Activity in the Early Years, you need to be at least 17 years of age, hold at least a relevant Level 2 qualification, such as the 1st4sport Level 2 Certificate in Supporting Learning in Physical Education and School Sport and be able to effectively communicate in English . Prior to certification, you must be 18 years of age.

The 1st4Sport Level 3 Certificate in Supporting Physical Development and Physical Activity in the Early Years prepares you for employment as a physical activity specialist in an early years setting such as a nursery, crèche or primary school. The qualification can also supplement the established knowledge of a Qualified Teaching Assistant, Higher Level Teaching Assistant (HLTA), as well as an established teacher.

This qualification is not available as part of an apprenticeship.

Fees are charged per learner and provide registration and certification for the qualification, as well as a 1st4sport Learner Pack, learning resources and a Certificate.
