The qualification is designed to provide benefit to you by supporting you in your role in the workplace as a sports development officer, and also preparing learners for employment in this area.

The qualification is aimed at learners who are already employed or in a long term work placement as an Assistant Sports Development Officer, Sports Development Officer, or relevant associated role. You might be a new member of staff who requires an induction into the job role, or an existing member of staff who would benefit from further training and development. As you will need to demonstrate competence in the workplace over time, therefore it is not suitable for you if you are in full-time education. To access the qualification, you must be at least 18 years old, due to the level of responsibility and duty of care associated with a role at this level in an active leisure environment. This qualification can also be accessed as part of the Advanced Apprenticeship in Sports Development.

To qualify for the 1st4sport Level 3 NVQ Diploma in Sports Development you must successfully achieveĀ  a total of nine units; five mandatory units plus four optional units.

The qualification is designed to prepare individuals for employment in paid or voluntary roles in sports development.

To register for this qualification, you must:

  • be accurately identified
  • be at least 16 years of age
  • be able to communicate effectively in English (this includes listening, speaking, reading and writing. You must be able to understand the requirements of the qualification and the information within the qualification materials in English without assistance. Where there is demand, this qualification may also be available in Welsh or Irish.)

There are no additional prerequisites to certification other than the successful completion of the required assessments.

This qualification can lead to paid or voluntary employment in Sports Development in a sports or community setting. Learners operating in a role at this level, can access CPD opportunities through CIMSPA. The skills and knowledge developed through this qualification may also be used to enable learners to progress to other management qualifications.
Other roles that the learner may consider exploring to include:

  • Duty Officer, Shift Supervisor, Assistant Manager
  • Sports/Leisure Centre General Manager

Recognised centres offering this qualification determine their own fees, and they will vary from centre to centre. The fees charged should entitle you to a programme of learning and assessment, registration and certification for the qualification, a 1st4sport Learner Pack and an appropriate learning resource.
