The 1st4sport Level 2 Certificate in Supporting Learning in Physical Education and School Sport has been developed in partnership with the Association for Physical Education (afPE) and is supported by employers and the industry. The qualification aims to provide you with an introduction to a number of roles through an engagement with physical education and school sport (PESS). These roles include teaching, activity leadership and coaching for young people. While this qualification is delivered through the medium of PESS, the skills may be used by you in other sporting environments, under appropriate guidance. 100% of the learning that you will receive will support you in being able to assist others in the delivery of physical education and school sport in a suitable environment.

The qualification is composed of nine mandatory units. During your achievement of the qualification you will complete the following learning outcomes:

  • Be able to understand key legislation related to physical education and school sport
  • Be able to understand and apply the principles of teaching physical education and coaching school sport
  • Be able to understand the principles of safe practice in physical education and school sport
  • Be able to understand the principles of child development through movement
  • Be able to promote lifelong health and well-being
  • Be able to understand the principles of inclusion in physical education and school sport
  • Prepare for physical education and school spot activities
  • Be able to lead physical education and school sport activities
  • Be able to conclude and review physical education and school sport activities

The qualification also provides you with:

  • a basis on which to make informed choices about an appropriate career in PESS
  • an opportunity to develop an understanding of supporting learning in PESS
  • an opportunity to develop PESS knowledge and skills that can be applied to different educational and school sport-related settings, such as coaching
  • an introduction to a career as a physical education teacher
  • an introduction to other opportunities to work as a PESS professional (e.g. a higher level teaching assistant [HLTA], teaching assistant [TA], coach, sports development officer, volunteer or leader).

Programmes of learning and assessment involve a mixture of activity plans, simulation and written tasks to support your development within the area of Physical Education and School Sport.

Alongside an NGB recognised level 2 coaching qualification, the 1st4sport Level 2 Certificate in Supporting Learning in Physical Education and School Sport is recognised as the industry standard qualification for children’s activity professionals.

The qualification also has the support of CIMSPA, the Chartered Institute for the Management of Sport and Physical Activity, as an industry-relevant qualification contributing to the industry’s professional framework also.

The qualification is designed to prepare you for employment in paid or voluntary roles which enable you to support the delivery of physical education and sport activities in a school sport environment.

You need to be 16 years of age or over and be able to effectively communicate in English prior to registering for the qualification.

This qualification is included within the Leadership Pathway of the Intermediate Apprenticeship in Activity Leadership; apprenticeship vacancies can be found here. However you may not wish, or you may not be eligible to complete an apprenticeship; in either situation the qualification is available to you on its own from a range of training providers and on completion you will be eligible for employment supporting the delivery of physical education and sport in schools.

You are encouraged to discuss your qualification needs with a Physical Education and School Sport educator/course provider.

This qualification may lead to paid or voluntary roles as a coach, children’s activity professional or sports leader in schools, enabling you to support the delivery of physical activity, under the guidance and supervision of a qualified teacher, normally as part of a schools overarching curriculum.

The skills and knowledge developed through this qualification may also be used to enable you to progress to other industry-relevant qualifications in coaching, activity leadership, supporting PE in school sport and sports development. You may also choose to follow a programme of training for a 1st4sport Level 2 Coaching qualification, the 1st4sport Level 3 Certificate in Supporting the Delivery of Physical Education and School Sport or the 1st4sport Level 3 NVQ Diploma in Supporting the Delivery of Physical Education and School Sport. The differences between the two Level 3 qualifications are as follows:

  • 1st4sport Level 3 Certificate in Supporting the Delivery of Physical Education and School Sport – This qualification is perfect if you already work, or aspire to work, in a physical education and school sport setting as it specifically designed to provide you with a greater understanding of programmes of study for physical education, the national curriculum and the environment in which you will be operating. This qualification may lead to paid or voluntary work as a children’s activity professional; sports development officer; sports coach; sports volunteer or leader. The qualification comprises eight units of assessment.
  • 1st4sport Level 3 NVQ Diploma in Supporting the Delivery of Physical Education and School Sport  – This qualification is designed for you if you are already working, or aspire to work, in a physical education and school sport setting. The qualification is composed of twelve mandatory units. To qualify for the 1st4sport Level 3 NVQ Diploma in Supporting the Delivery of Physical Education and School Sport, you must successfully complete the 12 mandatory units and achieve 54 credits. Your learning and assessment programme will require you to be assessed delivering physical education and school sport activities in a real school sport environment. You should discuss this requirement with your centre before starting you programme of learning, especially if you do not already have access to this. The qualification also forms the combined knowledge and competence component for the Advanced Apprenticeship in Supporting Teaching and Learning in Physical Education and School Sport.

The 1st4sport Level 2 Certificate in Supporting Learning in Physical Education and School Sport qualification also forms part of the knowledge component of the Intermediate Apprenticeship in Activity Leadership (Leadership pathway). This Intermediate Level Apprenticeship in Activity Leadership is designed for you if you are looking to develop your knowledge and skills or gain new knowledge and skills in order to progress your career within a relevant area, although entry to the sector is also possible at an intermediate level for new entrants to the sector.

Fees are charged per learner and provide registration and certification for the qualification, as well as a 1st4sport Learner Pack, learning resources and certificate.
