1st4sport Level 1 Award in Equestrian Coaching (General Riding)

The objective of the Level 1 Award in Equestrian Coaching (General Riding) is to provide a benefit to learners through an introduction into the principles/practice of safe, ethical and effective management and the assistant coaching of general riding sessions adults and/or young people in an appropriate environment.

This qualification is supported by the British Equestrian Federation (BEF), the National Governing Body for the sport, as recognised by Sport England.

The qualification is also endorsed by the trade association for coaches, UK Coaching, as meeting its UKCC criteria.

Prior to registration learners are required to:

  • be accurately identified
  • be at least 16 years of age
  • be able to communicate effectively in English (this includes listening, speaking, reading and writing).

Prior to certification learners are required to:

  • have attended a recognised safeguarding workshop (not online)
  • have attended a recognised first aid workshop

This qualification leads to paid or voluntary roles in jockey coaching to adults and young people children. The skills and knowledge developed through this qualification may also be used enable learners to progress to other industry-relevant qualifications in coaching other sports, activity leadership, supporting PE in school sport and sports development.

Following a period of practice as a qualified jockey coach, learners may also choose to follow a programme of training for the:

  • 1st4sport Level 2 Certificate in Equestrian Coaching

Other roles that the learner may consider exploring to include:

  • activity leader
  • sports volunteer.

Recognised centres offering this qualification determine their own fees, and they will vary from centre to centre. The fees charged should entitle you to a programme of learning and assessment, registration and certification for the qualification, a 1st4sport Learner Pack and an appropriate learning resource.
