1st4sport Level 2 Certificate in Coaching Children’s Cricket

The 1st4sport Level 2 Certificate in Coaching Children’s Cricket has been developed in partnership with The England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) and is supported by employers and the industry. The qualification is designed to provide you with a fundamental understanding of the practical and theoretical aspects of coaching cricket to children, including how to effectively plan, conduct and evaluate cricket coaching sessions for players usually, but not restricted to, 13 years of age and under. This is different to the 1st4sport Level 2 Certificate in Coaching Young People and Adults Cricket which is designed for you if you wish to predominantly coach young people (14 years or over) and adults. 100% of the learning that you will receive will support you in being able to do your job as children’s cricket coach.
The qualification is composed of eight mandatory units. Upon completion of the qualification, you will receive 18 credits. During your achievement of the qualification you will complete the following learning outcomes:
- Understanding the fundamentals of coaching cricket
- Understanding how to develop participants through coaching cricket
- Planning, preparing and delivering a children’s cricket coaching session
- Monitoring and evaluating children’s cricket coaching sessions
- Understanding the principles of safe and equitable coaching sessions
Programmes of learning and assessment are normally three-days long and involve a mixture of practical and theoretical activities to support your development as children’s cricket coach. You will be assessed on the completion of a series of written tasks, the delivery of a number of short/micro coaching activities and the completion of online activities, including multiple choice questions.
The qualification is recognised as the industry standard level 2 qualification for coaching cricket to children by the national governing body for cricket: The England and Wales Cricket Board.
The qualification has the support of CIMSPA, the Chartered Institute for the Management of Sport and Physical Activity, as an industry-relevant qualification contributing to the industry’s professional framework and is also recognised by and has the support of a range of employers, and colleges, as the sole qualification for those looking to begin a career in coaching cricket to children.
The qualification is also endorsed by the trade association for coaches, UK Coaching, as meeting its UKCC criteria.
The qualification is designed to prepare you for employment in paid or voluntary roles relating to coaching children’s cricket. The qualification is ideal for young people, experienced current or former players, or parents with an active interest in the sport. Holders of the ECB Cricket Activator certificate are also eligible for this qualification.
You must be 17 or older to register for the qualification. However, to be certificated for this qualification, you must be aged 18, you must have undergone training related to the protection of children and vulnerable adults from abuse, and you must have completed, via the ECB Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) department, a clear enhanced DBS check. This is due to the responsibilities associated with children’s cricket coaching.
This qualification is included within the Coaching Pathway of the Intermediate Apprenticeship in Activity Leadership; apprenticeship vacancies can be found here. However you may not wish, or you may not be eligible to complete an apprenticeship; in either situation the qualification is available to you on its own from a range of training providers and on completion it will qualify you as eligible for employment as a cricket coach.

Following successful completion of the 1st4sport Level 2 Certificate in Coaching Children’s Cricket you may choose to develop your skills by participating in continuing professional development (CPD) opportunities offered by the ECB which include:
- ECB Game Based Learning for Children
- ECB Creating the Learning Climate for Children
- ECB Skill Development for Children, Coaching in Primary Schools, Coaching in Secondary Schools and Disability Inclusion Training.
Following a period of practice working in a performance environment you may wish to progress to the 1st4sport Level 3 Certificate in Coaching Cricket . To register on the 1st4sport Level 3 Certificate in Coaching Cricket, you will need support from an approved endorsing body. The following Endorsing Bodies are accepted:
- County Cricket Board
- ECB Coaches Association Rep
- County Academy Director
- County Director of Cricket
- ICC Europe
The 1st4sport Level 3 Certificate in Coaching Cricket may lead to paid or voluntary roles in coaching the sport of cricket in a variety of settings including working as a head coach within an amateur cricket club or working as a coach within the professional game.
The 1st4sport Level 2 Certificate in Coaching Children’s Cricket qualification may also be used to enable progression to other industry-relevant qualifications in coaching.
Recognised centres offering this qualification determine their own fees and they will vary from centre to centre. The fees charged should entitle you to a programme of learning and assessment, registration and certification for the qualification, a 1st4sport Qualifications Learner Pack and appropriate learning resource.
