This qualification is designed to provide you with an introduction to the practical and theoretical aspects of coaching football. The foundation level of knowledge and skills developed by The Football Association will enable you to develop an understanding of the safe, ethical and effective management and coaching of football to players of all ages.

The foundation level of knowledge and skills developed through this qualification will enable you to create safe and fun coaching sessions through building, developing and extending a series of linked practices. Learners will be introduced to basic game formats and key rules, and the basics of the England DNA coaching fundamentals and playing principles through completion of four mandatory components; How We Coach, How We Play, The Future Player and How We Support. These components are further broken down into 16 modules of learning which cover topics such as; The Role of the Coach at level 1, Long Term Player Development (LTPD), Creating the Environment, How Players Learn, Leadership and Management, and Reflective Practice.

The qualification is recognised as the industry standard level 1 qualification for coaching football by the national governing body for Football in England: The Football Association. The FA is also the professional body for football coaches, providing services and support to those who hold this and other football qualifications.

It is also recognised by and has the support of a range of employers, including the County Football Associations, Football Clubs, schools and colleges, as the sole qualification for those looking to begin a career in coaching football.

The qualification is also endorsed by the lead agency for coaching, UK Coaching, as meeting its UKCC criteria.

The qualification is designed to prepare aspiring coaches for employment in paid or voluntary roles that will enable you to plan, deliver and review individual football coaching sessions. You will be able to lead sessions independently if you are over the age of 18.

It is most appropriate as the first stage on the football coaching career ladder.

You don’t need to hold any specific qualifications to access a programme of training for this qualification; however you do need to be 15 years of age. You will need, usually provided as part of the programme of learning, to hold an FA Emergency Aid Certificate and have attended The FA workshop ‘Safeguarding Children in Football’ (learners under the age of 18 years are eligible to complete an alternative to the workshop). You will also need to be 16 years of age (or older) to be certificated.

This qualification leads to paid or voluntary roles in coaching the sport of football in schools, colleges and local football clubs. The skills and knowledge developed through this qualification may also be used enable you to progress to other industry – relevant qualifications in coaching other sports, activity leadership, supporting PE in schools sport and sports development.

Following a period of practice as a qualified Level 1 coach, you may also choose to follow a programme of training for the 1st4sport Level 2 Certificate in Coaching Football .

Recognised centres offering this qualification determine their own fees and they will vary from centre to centre. The fees charged should entitle you to a programme of learning and assessment, registration and certification for the qualification, a 1st4sport Qualifications Learner Pack and appropriate learning resource.
