Swimming Teacher Apprentices – Brighton Swimming Centre
Seven young men and women all aged 18 are starting swimming teaching Apprenticeships at the Brighton Swimming Centre based in Brighton, Sussex.
They are employed by the centre as lifeguards and teaching assistants and over the next 6-12 months will complete their Apprenticeship.
The Apprenticeship they are undertaking includes the 1st4sport Level 2 Diploma in Coaching Learn to Swim along with the ASA level 1 and 2 Certificate in Teaching Aquatics qualifications, enabling them to become fully qualified swimming teachers within the leisure industry.
Brighton Swimming Centre formerly known as St Marys Hall School was under the threat of closure, the centre are passionate about swimming and as a result have taken over the pool block with its adjoining training rooms. The centre is keen to become the hub of the community looking for local schools, nurseries and playgroups to become regular users of the pool, as well as local sports clubs and community groups to come forward and make the most of its facilities which include three spacious training rooms.
Kirsti Jack, aged 18 said “I started working for Brighton Swimming Centre as a lifeguard after doing the NPLQ, but decided to do the Apprenticeship programme to be able to earn more money and become a qualified swimming teacher gaining a recognised qualification. I am currently in my gap year and thinking about going to Camp America next year.”
Sam Smith, aged 18 said ‘I have just come back from Camp America and would recommend it to anyone to gain the experience, I am doing an Apprenticeship at Brighton Swimming Centre to build on my experience, earn some money and progress on to being a swimming teacher’.
