1st4sport Level 2 Certificate in Coaching Squash (L2CCSQ)

The L2CCSQ is awarded by 1st4sport Qualifications and has been developed in partnership with the National Source Group for Squash. The L2CCSQ is accredited at Level 2 on the National Qualifications Framework.

Who is the L2CCSQ for?

  • People over 17 years of age who hold the 1st4sport Level 1 Certificate in Coaching Squash (or equivalent) and would like to develop and improve their coaching skills.
  • Students in further or higher education, studying sports-related qualifications, might also wish to pursue this vocational qualification as a further progression on the coaching ladder.

Why deliver the L2CCSQ?

  • To form part of a structured and progressive programme of sports coaching and other related qualifications, offering candidates access and involvement in the sport of squash.
  • As a further progression on the squash coaching ladder, providing progression opportunities for potential coaches.

What can candidates use the L2CCSQ for?

  • To gain paid or unpaid employment as a squash coach.
  • As part of the development of a credible CV for employment in the sport and recreation industry.
  • As evidence towards the achievement of a Level 2 N/SVQ in Sport and Recreation.
  • As a stepping-stone to the 1st4sport Level 3 Certificate in Coaching Squash (L3CCSQ).

Structure, delivery and assessment of the L2CCSQ

Qualification Structure

The Level 2 Certificate in Coaching Squash is composed of four mandatory units assessed in the context of squash (Unit 12).

  • Unit 1 – Coaching Principles and Ethics in Squash (QCA Unit No: J/103/1020)
  • Unit 2 – Plan Squash Coaching Sessions (QCA Unit No: L/103/1021)
  • Unit 3 – Conduct Squash Coaching Sessions (QCA Unit No: R/103/1022)
  • Unit 4 – Review Squash Coaching Sessions (QCA Unit No: Y/103/1023)
  • Unit 12 – Coaching Squash (QCA Unit No: K/500/4045)

NB: To complete the L2CCSQ, candidates must be a minimum of 17 years of age. It is recommended that a delivery programme for the L2CCSQ should include a minimum of 89 notional guided learning hours.

Assessment

Internal assessment comprises a series of assessed tasks that explore candidates' understanding of:

  • coaching principles and ethics in squash
  • how to plan squash coaching sessions
  • the delivery of squash coaching sessions
  • how to review squash coaching sessions.

One aspect of the internal assessment includes an observation of a planned practical coaching session and evaluation.

Independent assessment comprises observed assessment of a squash coaching session.

Tutor/Assessor and Internal Verifier Criteria

The generic 1st4sport Qualifications criteria for tutors, assessors and verifiers (see the Centre Recognition Application Form or the Recognised Centre Handbook) must be adhered to. The additional L2CCSQ requirements include the following criteria:

Tutors of the L2CCSQ are required to:

  • have a minimum of the England Squash or Squash Wales Level 3 Advanced Coach Award, or the 1st4sport/SQA Level 3 Certificate in Coaching Squash or equivalent
  • hold a recognised teaching qualification, hold the 1st4sport Certificate in Tutoring in Sport (CTS) or equivalent, or have attended a programme of tutor-training mapped to national occupational standards
  • be an accredited tutor, approved by the National Source Group for Squash
  • attend appropriate qualification-specific induction training.

Assessors of the L2CCSQ are required to:

  • have a minimum of the England Squash or Squash Wales Level 3 Advanced Coach Award, or the 1st4sport/SQA Level 3 Certificate in Coaching Squash or equivalent
  • hold or be working towards completing the ENTO Unit D32/33, the A1/A2 Assessor Units, hold the Introduction to Assessment Practice in Sport (IAPS) or equivalent, or have attended a programme of assessor-training matched to national occupational standards
  • be an accredited assessor approved by the National Source Group for Squash
  • attend appropriate qualification-specific induction training.

Internal verifiers are required to:

  • have a minimum of the England Squash or Squash Wales Level 3 Advanced Coach Award, or the 1st4sport Level 3 Certificate in Coaching Squash or equivalent
  • hold or be working towards completing the ENTO Unit D34, the V1 Verifier Unit or the 1st4sport Introduction to Internal Verification Practice in Sport
  • be an accredited verifier, approved by the National Source Group for Squash
  • attend appropriate qualification-specific induction training.
