Who is the L2CCSC for?
- Adults (over 16 years of age) who would like to develop and improve their coaching skills.
- Students in further or higher education, studying sports-related qualifications, might also wish to pursue this vocational qualification as a further progression on the coaching ladder.
Why deliver the L2CCSC?
To form part of a structured and progressive programme of sports coaching and other related qualifications, offering candidates access and involvement in strength and conditioning for sport.
As a further progression on the strength and conditioning coaching ladder, providing progression opportunities for potential coaches.
What can candidates use the L2CCSC for?
- To gain paid or unpaid employment as a strength and conditioning coach.
- As part of the development of a credible CV for employment in the sport and recreation industry.
- As evidence towards the achievement of a Level 2 NVQ in Coaching, Teaching and Instructing.
Structure, delivery and assessment of the L2CCSC
Qualification Structure
The L1CCSC is composed of four mandatory units assessed in the context of strength conditioning (Unit 9).
- Unit 1 – Coaching Principles and Ethics (QCA Unit No: J/103/1020)
- Unit 2 – Plan Coaching Sessions (QCA Unit No: L/103/1021)
- Unit 3 – Conduct Coaching Sessions (QCA Unit No: R/103/1022)
- Unit 4 – Review Coaching Sessions (QCA Unit No: Y/103/1023)
- Unit 9 – Coaching Strength and Conditioning (QCA Unit No: D/103/7650)
NB: To complete the L2CCSC, candidates must be a minimum of 16 years of age. Additionally, they are required to have some knowledge or experience of strength and conditioning, or of coaching in other sports at this level. Prior to certification, candidates must have evidence of having undergone training for Emergency First Aid, which includes CPR.
It is recommended that a delivery programme for the L2CCSC should include a minimum of 90 notional learning hours.
Assessment
Internal assessment comprises of the following:
- a series of assessed tasks that explore candidates' understanding of:
- coaching principles and ethics in strength and conditioning
- the preparation required to deliver strength and conditioning coaching sessions
- the delivery, review and evaluation of strength and conditioning coaching sessions
- an observation of a planned practical coaching session and evaluation
- internally assessed written assessment via a theory paper
Independent assessment comprises of the following:
- an observed assessment of a strength and conditioning coaching session.
Tutor/Assessor and Internal Verifier Criteria
The generic 1st4sport Qualifications criteria for tutors, assessors and verifiers (see the Centre Approval Application Pack or the Approved Centre Handbook) must be adhered to. The additional L2CCSC requirements include the following criteria:
Tutors/assessors are required to:
- be a UKSCA-accredited strength and conditioning coach, or hold the BWLA Instructors Award, a CSCS or a ASCA Level 2 award
- have a minimum of two years experience of regularly coaching strength and conditioning in a sport-specific context
- hold a recognised teaching qualification or the 1st4sport Certificate in Tutoring in Sport qualification, have attended tutor-training matched to nationally recognised standards, or have a minimum of one year’s experience of delivering training and education
- have attended a L2CCSC induction training event
- be an accredited sports-specific strength and conditioning tutor, assessor or internal verifier.
Those tutors and assessors responsible for delivering or assessing only the theoretical elements of the qualification must:
- hold a recognised qualification in sports science, physical education or a related subject
- hold a recognised teaching qualification or the 1st4sport Certificate in Tutoring in Sport qualification, have attended tutor-training matched to nationally recognised standards, or have a minimum of one year’s experience of delivering training and education
- have attended a L2CCSC induction training event.
Internal verifiers are required to:
- be a UKSCA-accredited strength and conditioning coach or hold the BWLA Instructors Award, a CSCS or an ASCA Level 2 award
- hold the minimum of a current Level 2 coaching qualification in a recognised sporting pathway
- have attended a L2CCSC induction training event.
