1st4sport Level 2 Certificate in Coaching Rugby Union (L2CCRU)

The L2CCRU is awarded by 1st4sport Qualifications and has been developed in partnership with the National Source Group for rugby union, which includes the Rugby Football Union (RFU), Welsh Rugby Union (WRU) and Scottish Rugby (SRU). Coaching Rugby Union is a pathway unit of the 1st4sport Level 2 Certificate in Coaching. It is accredited at Level 2 on the National Qualifications Framework and forms part of rugby union's UK Coaching Certificate (UKCC) endorsed coach education programme.

Who is the L2CCRU for?

Adults (over 18 years of age) who have a basic understanding of rugby union and who want to coach adults or children in the sport. It is aimed at grass roots level coaches who want to develop their coaching.

Candidates are encouraged to consider the 1st4sport Qualifications Level 1 Certificate in Coaching Rugby Union (L1CCRU) before applying for Level 2. Students in further or higher education, studying sports-related qualifications, might also wish to pursue this vocational qualification as a first step on the coaching ladder.

Why deliver the L2CCRU?

To form part of a structured and progressive programme of sports coaching and other related qualifications, offering candidates access and involvement in the sport of rugby union.As an access point to the RFU or WRU coaching ladder, this qualification has proved to be very popular with learners with some experience of rugby coaching.

What can candidates use the L2CCRU for?

  • To gain paid or unpaid employment as a club or school team coach.
  • As part of the development of a credible CV for employment in the sport and recreation industry.
  • As a stepping-stone to the 1st4sport Qualifications Level 3 Certificate in Coaching Rugby Union (L3CCRU).

Candidates may wish to attend aspects of the RFU Regional Coach Development Programme* or the RFU Constituent Body (CB) Programme* administered by RFU-affiliated county bodies. A similar programme is available via the offices of WRU** and their regions.

Structure, Delivery and Assessment of the L2CCRU

Qualification Structure

The L2CCRU is one of the many optional coaching pathways attached to the 1st4sport Level 2 Certificate in Coaching. The Level 2 Certificate in Coaching is composed of four mandatory units and a number of sport-specific optional pathway units, one of which is coaching rugby union (optional Unit 18). The combination of the rugby union coaching unit with the mandatory units creates the Level 2 Certificate in Rugby Union. Candidates who have completed the 1st4sport Level 2 Certificate in Coaching via one optional pathway may be able to claim APL for certain aspects of another pathway.

The qualification is composed of the following four units:

  • Unit 1 – Coaching Principles and Ethics
  • Unit 2 – Plan Coaching Sessions
  • Unit 3 – Conduct Coaching Sessions
  • Unit 4 – Review Coaching Sessions
  • Unit 18 – Coaching Rugby Union

It is recommended that a delivery programme for the L2CCRU should include 69 notional guided learning hours.

Assessment

Internal assessment comprises:

  • an observation of the candidate coaching rugby union
  • a review of session plans to support the assessment of performance across the breadth of the sport
  • a series of tasks that take the form of assignments/project work to cover the breadth of the knowledge of the qualification
  • oral and written questioning of candidates’ knowledge and understanding.

Independent assessment comprises observed practical assessment of the candidate coaching a session taken from the Practical Syllabus and oral questions on aspects of their performance, underpinning knowledge, understanding and application.

Tutor/Assessor and Internal Verifier Criteria

In addition to the generic 1st4sport Qualifications criteria for tutors, assessors and verifiers (see the 1st4sport Recognised Centre Handbook), tutors and assessors of the L2CCRU must:

  • hold the RFU or WRU Tutor Award* or have completed the RFU or WRU tutor training programme and be working towards the RFU or WRU Tutor Award

and

  • hold, as a minimum, the RFU Level 2 Coaching Award (pre-January 2005), WRU Level 3 Coaching Award or 1st4sport Qualifications Level 3 Certificate in Coaching Rugby Union or equivalent.
