1st4sport Level 2 Certificate in Coaching Rowing (L2CCROW)

The L2CCROW is awarded by 1st4sport Qualifications and has been developed in partnership with the National Source Group for Rowing. The L2CCROW is accredited at Level 2 on the National Qualifications Framework.

Who is the L2CCROW for?

  • Adults (over 16 years of age) who would like to develop and improve their coaching skills.
  • Students in further or higher education, studying sports-related qualifications, might also wish to pursue this vocational qualification as a further progression on the coaching ladder.

Why deliver the L2CCROW?

  • To form part of a structured and progressive programme of sports coaching and other related qualifications, offering candidates access and involvement in the sport of rowing.
  • As a further progression on the rowing coaching ladder, providing progression opportunities for potential coaches.

What can candidates use the L2CCROW for?

  • To gain paid or unpaid employment as a rowing coach.
  • As part of the development of a credible CV for employment in the sport and recreation industry.
  • As evidence towards the achievement of a Level 2 N/SVQ in Sport and Recreation.

NB. Due to the level of autonomy and responsibility attached to a qualified coach operating at this level, holders of this qualification who are under 18 years of age must be supervised by another licensed coach, qualified to a minimum of Level 2 or above, or a qualified teacher.

Structure, delivery and assessment of the L2CCROW

Qualification Structure

The L2CCROW is one of a number of optional pathways attached to the 1st4sport Level 2 Certificate in Coaching. The 1st4sport Level 2 Certificate in Coaching is composed of four mandatory units and a number of sport-specific optional pathway units, one of which is Coaching Rowing (optional Unit 7). The combination of the rowing coaching unit with the four mandatory units creates the 1st4sport Level 2 Certificate in Coaching Rowing. Candidates who have completed the 1st4sport Level 2 Certificate in Coaching via one optional pathway, may be able to claim APL for certain aspects of another pathway.

The qualification is composed of the following five units:

  • Unit 1 – Coaching Principles and Ethics (QCA Unit No: J/103/1020)
  • Unit 2 – Plan Coaching Sessions (QCA Unit No: L/103/1021)
  • Unit 3 – Conduct Coaching Sessions (QCA Unit No: R/103/1022)
  • Unit 4 – Review Coaching Sessions (QCA Unit No: Y/103/1023)
  • Unit 7 – Coaching Rowing (QCA Unit No: H/103/3034)

It is recommended that a delivery programme for the L2CCROW should include a minimum of 88 notional learning hours.

Assessment

Internal assessment comprises a series of assessed tasks that explore candidates' understanding of safe and ethical coaching in rowing.

One aspect of the internal assessment includes an observation of a planned practical coaching session and evaluation.

There is also an internally assessed written assessment via a multiple-choice paper.

Independent assessment comprises of:

  • the preparation required to deliver rowing coaching sessions
  • the delivery and evaluation of rowing coaching sessions.

Tutor/Assessor and Internal Verifier Criteria

The generic 1st4sport Qualifications criteria for tutors, assessors and verifiers (see the Centre Recognition Application Form or the Recognised Centre Handbook) must be adhered to. The additional L2CCROW requirements include the following criteria:

Tutors and internal assessors of the 1st4sport L2CCROW must:

  • have a minimum of a BCAS Bronze Coaching Award or the 1st4sport Level 3 Certificate in Coaching Rowing
  • hold or be working towards the 1st4sport Certificate in Tutoring in Sport (CTS) or have attended a programme of tutor-training, matched to nationally recognised standards
  • be an accredited ARA tutor/internal assessor
  • attend appropriate sport-specific qualification induction training.

Independent assessors of the 1st4sport L2CCROW must:

  • have a minimum of a BCAS Bronze Coaching Award or the 1st4sport Level 3 Certificate in Coaching Rowing
  • hold or be working towards the ENTO Unit D32/33, the A1/A2 Assessor Units or the 1st4sport Introduction to Assessment Practice in Sport qualification (IAPS)
  • be an accredited ARA independent assessor
  • attend appropriate sport-specific qualification induction training.

Internal verifiers of the 1st4sport Level 2 Certificate in Coaching via the pathway of rowing must:

  • have a minimum of a BCAS Silver Coaching Award or the 1st4sport Level 3 Certificate in Coaching Rowing
  • hold or be working towards completing the ENTO Unit D34, the V1 Verifier Unit or the 1st4sport Certificate in Internal Verification Practice in Sport
  • be an accredited ARA verifier
  • attend appropriate sport-specific qualification induction training.
