Who is the L2CCIR for?
- Adults (over 18 years of age) who hold a minimum of an emergency aid qualification, and who would like to develop and improve their coaching skills
- Students in further or higher education studying sports-related qualifications might also wish to pursue this vocational qualification as a further progression on the coaching ladder.
Why deliver the L2CCIR?
- To form part of a structured and progressive programme of sports coaching and other related qualifications, offering candidates access and involvement in indoor rowing
- As a further progression on the indoor rowing coaching ladder, providing progression opportunities for potential coaches.
What can candidates use the L2CCIR for?
- To gain paid or unpaid employment as an indoor rowing coach
- As part of the development of a credible CV for employment in the sport and recreation industry
- As evidence towards the achievement of a Level 2 N/SVQ in Sport and Recreation.
Structure, delivery and assessment of the L2CCIR
Qualification Structure
The L2CCIR is one of the many optional pathways attached to the 1st4sport Level 2 Certificate in Coaching. The 1st4sport Level 2 Certificate in Coaching is composed of four mandatory units and a number of sport-specific optional pathway units, one of which is Coaching Indoor Rowing (optional unit 21). The combination of the Indoor Rowing coaching unit with the four mandatory units creates the 1st4sport Level 2 Certificate in Coaching Indoor Rowing. Candidates who have completed the 1st4sport Level 2 Certificate in Coaching via one optional pathway, may be able to claim APL for certain aspects of another pathway.
The qualification is composed of the following units:
- Unit 1 – Coaching Principles and Ethics (QCA Unit No: J/103/1020)
- Unit 2 – Plan Coaching Sessions (QCA Unit No: L/103/1021
- Unit 3 – Conduct Coaching Sessions (QCA Unit No: R/103/1022)
- Unit 4 – Review Coaching Sessions (QCA Unit No: Y/103/1023)
- Unit 21 – Coaching Indoor Rowing (QCA Unit No: R/501/2740)
NB: To complete the L2CCIR, candidates must be a minimum of 18 years of age and hold a minimum of an emergency aid qualification.
It is recommended that a delivery programme for the L2CCIR should include a minimum of 98 notional learning hours.
Assessment
Internal assessment comprises a series of assessed tasks that explore candidates' understanding of:
- dealing with accidents, illness and emergencies
- coaching principles and ethics in indoor rowing
- the preparations required to deliver indoor rowing coaching sessions
- the delivery, review and evaluation of indoor rowing coaching sessions.
One aspect of the internal assessment includes an observation of a planned practical coaching session and evaluation.
Independent assessment comprises of an observed assessment of an indoor rowing coaching session.
Criteria for Tutors/Assessors/Internal Verifiers of the L2CCIR
It is acknowledged that for the 1st4sport Level 2 Certificate in Coaching Indoor Rowing, the same person or two different people may fulfil the roles of tutor and internal assessor. Whichever option is chosen, the centre’s external verifier will wish to ensure that all persons providing training or assessment for the qualification meet the qualification-specific criteria below.
Tutors of the 1st4sport Level 2 Certificate in Coaching Indoor Rowing must:
- have a minimum of an BCAS Bronze Coaching Award or the 1st4sport Level 3 Certificate in Coaching Rowing, or a relevant level 3 qualification such as a recognised (NQF accredited) Personal Trainer Award matched to nationally recognised standards
- hold or be working towards the 1st4sport Certificate in Tutoring in Sport (CTS) or have attended a programme of tutor training matched to nationally recognised standards
- be an accredited ARA Indoor Rowing Tutor
- attend appropriate qualification specific induction training.
Internal/independent assessors of the 1st4sport Level 2 Certificate in Coaching Indoor Rowing must:
- have a minimum of an BCAS Bronze Coaching Award or the 1st4sport Level 3 Certificate in Coaching Rowing or a relevant level 3 qualification such as a recognised (NQF accredited) Personal Trainer Award matched to nationally recognised standards
- hold the ENTO Unit D32/33, or hold or be working towards the ENTO unit A1 Assessor Unit, or the 1st4sport Introduction to Assessment Practice in Sport qualification (IAPS)
- be an accredited ARA Indoor Rowing assessor
- attend appropriate qualification specific induction training.
Internal verifiers for the 1st4sport Level 2 Certificate in Coaching Indoor Rowing must meet the generic 1st4sport Qualifications criteria for internal verifiers and must:
- have a minimum of an BCAS Bronze Coaching Award or the 1st4sport Level 3 Certificate in Coaching Rowing or a relevant level 3 qualification such as a recognised (NQF accredited) Personal Trainer Award matched to nationally recognised standards
- hold the ENTO Unit D34, or hold or be working towards completing the ENTO unit V1 Verifier Unit, or the 1st4sport Certificate in Internal Verification Practice in Sport (CIVPS)
- be an accredited ARA Indoor Rowing verifier
- attend appropriate qualification specific induction training.
