1st4sport Level 2 Certificate in Coaching Hockey (L2CCH)

The L2CCH is awarded by 1st4sport Qualifications and has been developed in partnership with England Hockey. It is accredited at Level 2 on the National Qualifications Framework.

Who is the L2CCH for?

Adults (over 17 years of age or 18 at certification) who have an interest in coaching hockey and would like to develop and improve their coaching skills. Students in further or higher education, studying sports-related qualifications, might also wish to pursue this vocational qualification as a first step on the coaching ladder.

Candidates are encouraged to consider the 1st4sport Qualifications Level 1 Certificate in Coaching Hockey (L1CCH) before applying for Level 2.

Candidates should have evidence of having undergone awareness training in the protection of children from abuse and hold a current/valid Emergency Aid Certificate. This should be evidenced through a certificate of attendance on sports coach UK’s ‘Good Practice and Child Protection’ workshop*, or equivalent, and an Emergency Aid Certificate.

Why deliver the L2CCH?

  • To form part of a structured and progressive programme of sports coaching and other related qualifications, offering candidates access and involvement in the sport of hockey.
  • As an access point to the England Hockey coaching ladder, this qualification has proved to be very popular with learners with some experience of hockey coaching.

What can candidates use the L2CCH for?

  • To gain paid or unpaid employment as a hockey coach.
  • As part of the development of a credible CV for employment in the sport and recreation industry.
  • To progress on to the Level 2 NVQ in Coaching, Teaching and Instructing Hockey or other vocationally related hockey coaching qualifications.
  • To progress on to the Level 3 Certificate in Coaching Hockey (L3CCH).

Structure, Delivery and Assessment of L2CCH

Qualification Structure

It is recommended that a delivery programme for the L2CCH should include a minimum of 82 notional guided learning hours.

The qualification is composed of the following three units:

  • Unit 1 – Hockey Coaching Principles and Ethics
  • Unit 2 – Plan Hockey Coaching Sessions
  • Unit 3 – Conduct and Evaluate Hockey Coaching Sessions

Assessment

Internal assessment comprises:

  • a series of assessed tasks covering all units of the qualification
  • an observation of candidates’ practical coaching across all areas of the Practical Syllabus of the sport, via a log of a minimum of 14 mentored coaching sessions, associated session plans and records of self-evaluations.

Independent assessment comprises:

  • an observation of candidates coaching two practical sessions, one to a group of adults and one to a group of children
  • oral questioning on aspects of their performance, knowledge, understanding and application.

Tutor, Assessor and Internal Verifier Criteria

In addition to the generic 1st4sport Qualifications criteria for tutors, assessors and verifiers (see the Centre Approval Application Pack or the Approved Centre Handbook), tutors and assessors of the L2CCH must:

  • have a minimum of a recognised Level 3 hockey coaching qualification which might include the Level 3 Certificate in Coaching Hockey
  • hold the Employment National Training Organisations (ENTO) Units D32/D33, the A1 Assessor Award or be working towards completing the Introduction to Assessment Practice in Sport qualification
  • be accredited England Hockey tutors and assessors
  • attend an appropriate qualification-specific induction event.

In addition to the above, internal verifiers of the L2CCH must be able to demonstrate current competence in the internal quality assurance of qualifications and preferably hold D34 or be working towards the new ENTO V1 Unit.
