1st4sport Level 2 Certificate in Coaching Angling (L2CCA)

The L2CCA is awarded by 1st4sport Qualifications and has been developed in partnership with the Angling Development Board (ADB), which is composed of The National Federation of Anglers, The National Federation of Sea Anglers and The Salmon and Trout Association. It is accredited at Level 2 on the National Qualifications Framework.

Who is the L2CCA for?

Adults (over 17 years of age) who have personal experience of angling in one of the three contexts (coarse, game and sea), hold a recognised coaching or teaching qualification at level 1 or above and who would like to develop an understanding of safe, ethical and effective angling coaching.

Students in further or higher education, studying sports-related qualifications, might also wish to pursue this vocational qualification as a first step on the coaching ladder.

Candidates are encouraged to consider the 1st4sport Qualifications Level 1 Certificate in Coaching Angling (L1CCA) before applying for the Level 2.

Why deliver the L2CCA?

  • To form part of a structured and progressive programme of sports coaching and other related qualifications, offering candidates access and involvement in the sport of angling.
  • As an access point to the angling coaching ladder, this qualification has proved to be very popular with learners with some experience of coaching.

What can candidates use the L2CCA for?

  • To seek paid or unpaid employment as an angling coach.
  • As part of the development of a credible CV for employment in the sport and recreation industry.
  • To progress on to a Level 2 Sport and Recreation N/SVQ in Coaching, Teaching and Instructing Angling (if available) or other vocational angling coaching qualifications.

Structure, Delivery and Assessment of the L2CCA

Qualification Structure

It is recommended that a delivery programme for the L2CCA should include a minimum of 90 notional guided learning hours.

The qualification is composed of the following four units:

  • Unit 1 – Angling Coaching Principles and Ethics
  • Unit 2 – Develop and Promote Angling
  • Unit 3 – Plan Angling Coaching Sessions
  • Unit 4 – Conduct Angling Coaching Sessions

Assessment

Internal assessment comprises:

  • a series of assessed tasks covering all four units of the qualification
  • an internally assessed written paper covering aspects of all four units of the qualification
  • an assessment of candidates’ practical coaching, covering aspects of the Practical Syllabus, via a log of 12+ coaching sessions, associated session plans and records of self-evaluation
  • an observation of at least one coaching session.

Independent assessment comprises:

  • an observed assessment of candidates’ practical coaching ability
  • oral questioning on their performance, knowledge, understanding and application.

Tutor, Assessor and Internal Verifier Criteria

In addition to the generic 1st4sport Qualifications criteria (see the Centre Recognition Application Pack or the Recognised Centre Handbook), tutors, assessors and verifiers for the L2CCA must:

  • hold the ADB Tutor’s Certificate and ADB Assessor’s Certificate, the Introduction to Assessment Practice in Sport qualification or Employment National Training Organisations (ENTO) Units D32/D33 or A1/A2
  • be currently licensed practitioners, via the ADB coach licensing scheme, to carry out their specific roles.

Internal and independent assessors and internal verifiers are also encouraged to seek certification of their competence via qualifications linked to the appropriate units of the ENTO standards.
