1st4sport Level 1 Certificate in Coaching Strength and Conditioning (L1CCSC)

The L1CCSC is awarded by 1st4sport Qualifications and has been developed in partnership with the Rugby Football Union. The L1CCSC is accredited at Level 1 on the National Qualifications Framework.

Who is the L1CCSC for?

  • People over 16 years of age who would like to develop and improve their coaching knowledge and skills in strength and conditioning for sport.
  • Students in further or higher education, studying sports-related qualifications, might also wish to pursue this vocational qualification as a further progression on the coaching ladder.

Why deliver the L1CCSC?

To form part of a structured and progressive programme of coaching and other related qualifications, offering candidates access and involvement in coaching strength and conditioning for sport. As the first rung on the strength and conditioning-coaching ladder, providing progression opportunities for potential coaches.

What can candidates use the L1CCSC for?

  • To gain paid or unpaid employment as an assistant strength and conditioning coach.
  • As part of the development of a credible CV for employment in the sport and recreation industry.
  • As a stepping-stone to the 1st4sport Level 2 Certificate in Coaching Strength and Conditioning for Sport.

Structure, delivery and assessment of the L1CCSC

Qualification Structure

The L1CCSC is composed of four mandatory units assessed in the context of strength conditioning (Unit 17).

  • Unit 1 – Introduction to Safe and Ethical Coaching (QCA Unit No: M/103/5014)
  • Unit 2 – Prepare to Deliver Coaching Activities (QCA Unit No: T/103/5015)
  • Unit 3 – Deliver and Review Coaching Activities (QCA Unit No: A/103/5016)
  • Unit 17 – Coaching Strength and Conditioning for Sport (QCA Unit No: H/500/4870)

NB: To complete the L1CCSC, candidates must be a minimum of 16 years of age. It is recommended that a delivery programme for the L1CCSC should include a minimum of 31 notional learning hours.

Assessment

Internal assessment requires the candidate to:

  • complete a series of assessed tasks covering all four units of the qualification
  • complete observed practical assessment of their coaching skills, taken from the practical syllabus, and oral questions on aspects of their performance, underpinning knowledge, understanding and application.

Independent assessment requires the candidate to:

  • complete an independently assessed task covering ethics, equality and child protection.

Tutor/Assessor and Internal Verifier Criteria

The generic 1st4sport Qualifications criteria for tutors, assessors and verifiers (see the Centre Recognition Application Form or the Recognised Centre Handbook) must be adhered to. The additional L2CCSC requirements include the following criteria:

Tutors, internal assessors and independent assessors are required to:

  • hold the 1st4sport Level 2 Certificate in Coaching Strength and Conditioning for Sport
  • be a UKSCA-accredited Strength and Conditioning Coach or hold the BWLA Instructors Award, a CSCS or an ASCA Level 2 award, or have been a practising PE teacher for a minimum period of two years
  • have a minimum of two years’ experience of regularly coaching strength and conditioning in a sport-specific context, or have been a practising PE teacher for a minimum period of two years
  • hold a recognised teaching qualification, the 1st4sport Certificate in Tutoring in Sport qualification, have attended tutor-training matched to nationally recognised standards, or have a minimum of one year’s experience of delivering training and education
  • have attended a L1CCSC induction training event
  • be an accredited sports-specific strength and conditioning tutor, assessor or internal verifier.

Those tutors and assessors responsible for delivering or assessing only the theoretical elements of the qualification are required to:

  • hold a recognised qualification in sports science, physical education or a related subject
  • hold a recognised teaching qualification, the 1st4sport Certificate in Tutoring in Sport, have attended tutor-training matched to nationally recognised standards, or have a minimum of one year’s experience of delivering training and education
  • have attended an L1CCSC induction training event.

Criteria for Internal Verifiers

Internal verifiers of the L1CCSC are required to:

  • be a UKSCA-accredited Strength and Conditioning Coach, hold the BWLA Instructors Award, a CSCS or an ASCA Level 2 award, or be a practising PE teacher
  • hold the minimum of a current Level 2 coaching qualification in a recognised sporting pathway
  • have attended an L1CCSC induction training event.
