1st4sport Level 1 Certificate in Coaching Rugby League (L1CCRL)

The L1CCRL is awarded by 1st4sport Qualifications and has been developed in partnership with the National Source Group for Rugby League.

Who is the L1CCRL for?

  • Adults (over 16 years of age) who would like to develop and improve their coaching skills.
  • Students in further or higher education, studying sports-related qualifications, might also wish to pursue this vocational qualification as the first rung on the coaching ladder.

Why deliver the L1CCRL?

  • To form part of a structured and progressive programme of sports coaching and other related qualifications, offering candidates access and involvement in the sport of rugby league.
  • As the first rung on the rugby league coaching ladder, providing progression opportunities for potential coaches.

What can candidates use the L1CCRL for?

  • To gain paid or unpaid employment as an assistant to an appropriately qualified rugby league coach.
  • As part of the development of a credible CV for employment in the sport and recreation industry.
  • As evidence towards the achievement of a Level 1 N/SVQ in Sport and Recreation.
  • As a stepping-stone to the 1st4sport Level 2 Certificate in Coaching Rugby League (L2CCRL).

Structure, delivery and assessment of the L1CCRL

Qualification Structure

The L1CCRL is one of many optional pathways attached to the 1st4sport Level 1 Certificate in Coaching. The 1st4sport Level 1 Certificate in Coaching is composed of three mandatory units and a number of sport-specific optional pathway units, one of which is Coaching Rugby League (optional unit 6). The combination of the rugby league coaching unit with the three mandatory units creates the 1st4sport Level 1 Certificate in Coaching Rugby League. Candidates who have completed the 1st4sport Level 1 Certificate in Coaching via one optional pathway, may be able to claim APL for certain aspects of another pathway.

The qualification is composed of the following four units:

  • Unit 1 – Introduction to Safe and Ethical Coaching (QCA Unit No: M/103/5014)
    Unit 2 – Prepare to Deliver Coaching Activities (QCA Unit No: T/103/5015)
    Unit 3 – Deliver and Review Coaching Activities (QCA Unit No: A/103/5016)
    Unit 6 – Coaching Rugby League (QCA Unit No: L/103/5652)

NB: To complete the L1CCRL, candidates must be a minimum of 16 years of age.

It is recommended that a delivery programme for the L1CCRL should include a minimum of 38 notional guided learning hours.

Assessment

Internal assessment comprises a series of assessed tasks that explore candidates' understanding of:

  • safe and ethical coaching in rugby league
  • the preparation required to deliver rugby league coaching activities
  • the delivery and evaluation of rugby league coaching activities.

One aspect of the internal assessment includes an observation of a practical coaching activity and evaluation.

Independent assessment comprises of a written multiple-choice paper.

Tutor/Assessor Criteria

The generic 1st4sport Qualifications criteria for tutors, assessors and verifiers (see the Centre Recognition Application Form or the Recognised Centre Handbook) must be adhered to. The additional L1CCRL requirements include the following criteria:

Tutors/assessors are required to:

  • have a minimum of an RFL senior coach qualification or the 1st4sport Level 3 Certificate in Coaching Rugby League qualification
  • hold or be working towards completing the ENTO Unit D32/33, the A1/A2 Assessor Units, the 1st4sport Introduction to Assessment Practice in Sport qualification (IAPS), or have attended a programme of assessor-training matched to nationally recognised standards
  • hold a 1st4sport Certificate in Tutoring in Sport (CTS), a recognised teaching award, or have attended a programme of tutor-training matched to nationally recognised standards
  • hold a current Rugby Football League tutor/assessor licence
  • attend appropriate sport-specific qualification induction training.
