1st4sport Level 1 Certificate in Coaching Netball (L1CCNB)

The L1CCNB is awarded by 1st4sport Qualifications and has been developed in partnership with the National Source Group for Netball. The L1CCNB is accredited at Level 1 on the National Qualifications Framework.

Who is the L1CCNB for?

  • Adults (over 16 years of age) who would like to develop and improve their coaching skills.
  • Students in further or higher education, studying sports-related qualifications, might also wish to pursue this vocational qualification as the first rung on the coaching ladder.

Why deliver the L1CCNB?

  • To form part of a structured and progressive programme of sports coaching and other related qualifications, offering candidates access and involvement in the sport of netball.
  • As the first rung on the netball coaching ladder, providing progression opportunities for potential coaches.

What can candidates use the L1CCNB for?

  • To gain paid or unpaid employment as an assistant to an appropriately qualified club coach, or to coach netball.
  • As part of the development of a credible CV for employment in the sport and recreation industry.
  • As evidence towards the achievement of a Level 1 N/SVQ in Sport and Recreation.
  • As a stepping-stone to the 1st4sport Level 2 Certificate in Coaching Netball (L2CCNB).

Structure, delivery and assessment of the L1CCNB

Qualification Structure

The L1CCNB is one of the many optional pathways attached to the 1st4sport Level 1 Certificate in Coaching. The 1st4sport Level 1 Certificate in Coaching is composed of three mandatory units and a number of sport-specific optional pathway units, one of which is Coaching Netball (optional unit 10). The combination of the netball coaching unit with the three mandatory units creates the 1st4sport Level 1 Certificate in Coaching Netball. Candidates who have completed the 1st4sport Level 1 Certificate in Coaching via one optional pathway, may be able to claim APL for certain aspects of another pathway.

The qualification is composed of the following four units:

  • Unit 1 – Introduction to Safe and Ethical Coaching (QCA Unit No: M/103/5014)
  • Unit 2 – Prepare to Deliver Coaching Activities (QCA Unit No: T/103/5015)
  • Unit 3 – Deliver and Review Coaching Activities (QCA Unit No: A/103/5016)
  • Unit 10 – Coaching Netball (QCA Unit No: J/103/8310)

NB: To complete the L1CCNB, candidates must be a minimum of 16 years of age.

It is recommended that a delivery programme for the L1CCNB should include a minimum of 34 notional learning hours.

Assessment

Internal assessment comprises a series of assessed tasks that explore candidates' understanding of:

  • safe and ethical coaching in netball
  • the preparation required to deliver netball coaching activities
  • the delivery and evaluation of netball coaching activities.

One aspect of the internal assessment includes an observation of three practical coaching activities and evaluations.

Independent assessment comprises of an observation of a practical coaching activity and evaluation.

Tutor/Assessor and Internal Verifier Criteria

The generic 1st4sport Qualifications criteria for tutors, assessors and verifiers (see the Centre Approval Application Pack or the Approved Centre Handbook) must be adhered to. The additional L1CCNB requirements include the following criteria:

Tutors/internal assessors are required to:

  • be an accredited tutor with the Netball UKCC Source Group
  • have a minimum of a Level 2 Coaching Award in Netball (or equivalent, as recognised by the Netball UKCC Source Group) or the 1st4sport Level 2 Certificate in Coaching Netball
  • hold a recognised teaching qualification or the 1st4sport Certificate in Tutoring in Sport (CTS) or equivalent, and have attended a programme of tutor-training mapped to national standards and the netball assessment module. (An education or training background is desirable)
  • attend appropriate qualification-specific induction training.

Independent assessors are required to:

  • be an accredited assessor with the Netball UKCC Source Group
  • hold a minimum of a Level 2 Coaching Award in Netball (or equivalent, as recognised by the Netball UKCC Source Group) or the 1st4sport Level 2 Certificate in Coaching Netball
  • hold a recognised assessment qualification, ENTO units D32/33 or the A1 Assessor units, or hold the Introduction to Assessment Practice in Sport (IAPS) or equivalent, or have attended a programme of assessor-training mapped to national standards
  • attend appropriate qualification-specific induction training.

Internal verifiers are required to:

  • be an accredited internal verifier with the Netball UKCC Source Group
  • hold a minimum of a Level 2 Coaching Award in Netball (or equivalent, as recognised by the Netball UKCC Source Group) or the 1st4sport Level 2 Certificate in Coaching Netball
  • hold or be working towards completing the ENTO Unit D34 or the V1 Verifier Unit, or the 1st4sport Introduction to Internal Verification Practice in Sport, or have attended a programme of internal verifier training mapped to national standards
  • hold a recognised assessment qualification (ENTO units D32/33 or the A1 Assessor units or hold the Introduction to Assessment Practice in Sport (IAPS) or equivalent, or have attended a programme of assessor-training mapped to national standards
  • attend appropriate qualification-specific induction training.
