1st4sport Level 1 Certificate in Coaching Basketball (L1CCBB)

The L1CCBB is awarded by 1st4sport Qualifications and has been developed in partnership with the National Source Group for Basketball, which is composed of members from the home country national governing bodies: England Basketball, basketballscotland, Basketball Wales and the Great Britain Wheelchair Basketball Association. The L1CCBB is accredited at Level 1 on the National Qualifications Framework.

Who is the L1CCBB for?

  • Adults (over 16 years of age) who are looking for an introduction to working with grass-roots basketball players, or parents of children playing basketball who would like to become more involved.
  • Students in further or higher education, studying sports-related qualifications, might also wish to pursue this vocational qualification as the first rung on the coaching ladder.

Why deliver the L1CCBB?

  • To form part of a structured and progressive programme of sports coaching and other related qualifications, offering candidates access and involvement in the sport of basketball.
  • As the first rung on the basketball coaching ladder, providing progression opportunities for potential coaches.

What can candidates use the L1CCBB for?

  • To gain paid or unpaid employment as an assistant to an appropriately qualified club or school team coach, or to coach basketball.
  • As part of the development of a credible CV for employment in the sport and recreation industry.
  • As evidence towards the achievement of a Level 1 N/SVQ in Sport and Recreation.
  • As a stepping-stone to the 1st4sport Qualifications Level 2 Certificate in Coaching Basketball (L2CCBB).

Structure, delivery and assessment of the L1CCBB

Qualification Structure

The L1CCBB is one of the many optional pathways attached to the 1st4sport Qualifications Level 1 Certificate in Coaching. The Level 1 Certificate in Coaching is composed of three mandatory units and a number of sport-specific optional pathway units, one of which is coaching basketball (optional unit 8). The combination of the basketball coaching unit with the three mandatory units creates the Level 1 Certificate in Coaching Basketball. Candidates who have completed the 1st4sport Qualifications Level 1 Certificate in Coaching via one optional pathway, may be able to claim APL for certain aspects of another pathway.

The qualification is composed of the following four units:

  • Unit 1 – Introduction to Safe and Ethical Coaching (QCA Unit No: M/103/5014)
  • Unit 2 – Prepare to Deliver Coaching Activities (QCA Unit No: T/103/5015)
  • Unit 3 – Deliver and Review Coaching Activities (QCA Unit No: A/103/5016)
  • Unit 8 – Coaching Basketball (QCA Unit No: T/103/6245)

NB: To complete the L1CCBB, candidates must be a minimum of 16 years of age. Additionally, they are required to have previous experience of playing basketball or must be able to demonstrate knowledge and understanding of the theory and practice involved in playing basketball.

It is recommended that a delivery programme for the L1CCBB should include a minimum of 34 notional guided learning hours, including a minimum of 12 hours directed study.

Assessment

Internal assessment comprises a series of assessed tasks that explore candidates' understanding of:

  • safe and ethical coaching in basketball
  • the preparations required to deliver basketball coaching activities
  • the delivery and evaluation of basketball coaching activities.

One aspect of the internal assessment includes an observation of a pre-planned 15-minute practical coaching activity and evaluation.Independent assessment comprises of a 30-minute written assessment via a multiple-choice/short answer question paper.

Tutor/Assessor and Internal Verifier Criteria

The generic 1st4sport Qualifications criteria for tutors, assessors and verifiers (see the Centre Recognition Application Pack or the Recognised Centre Handbook) must be adhered to. The additional L1CCBB requirements include the following criteria:

Tutors are required to:

  • have a minimum of a Level 2 qualification in coaching basketball or the 1st4sport Qualifications Level 2 Certificate in Coaching Basketball, or equivalent
  • hold a recognised teaching qualification or the 1st4sport Qualifications Certificate in Tutoring in Sport (CTS) or equivalent, or have attended a programme of tutor-training matched to NOS
  • be an accredited basketball tutor with the NSG for basketball.
  • attend appropriate qualification-specific induction training.

Assessors are required to:

  • have a minimum of a Level 2 qualification in coaching basketball or the 1st4sport Qualifications Level 2 Certificate in Coaching Basketball, or equivalent
  • be an accredited basketball assessor or be an accredited basketball tutor with the NSG for basketball§ hold, or be working towards completing, the ENTO Unit D32/33 or the A1/A2 Assessor Units, or hold the 1st4sport Qualifications Introduction to Assessment Practice in Sport (IAPS), or equivalent, or have attended a programme of assessor-training matched to the NOS
  • attend appropriate qualification-specific induction training.

Internal verifiers are required to:

  • have a minimum of a Level 2 coaching qualification in coaching basketball or the 1st4sport Qualifications Level 2 Certificate in Coaching Basketball, or equivalent
  • hold or be working towards completing the ENTO Unit D34 or the V1 Verifier Unit, or the 1st4sport Qualifications Introduction to Internal Verification Practice in Sport§ be an accredited basketball verifier or be an accredited basketball tutor with the NSG for basketball
  • attend appropriate qualification-specific induction training.
