1st4sport Level 1 Certificate in Coaching Angling (L1CCA)

The L1CCA is awarded by 1st4sport Qualifications and has been developed in partnership with the Angling Development Board (ADB). The L1CCA is accredited at Level 1 on the National Qualifications Framework.

Who is the L1CCA for?

Adults (over 16 years of age) who would like to develop and improve their coaching skills.

Students in further or higher education, studying sports-related qualifications, might also wish to pursue this vocational qualification as the first rung on the coaching ladder.

Why deliver the L1CCA?

To form part of a structured and progressive programme of sports coaching and other related qualifications, offering candidates access and involvement in the sport of angling.

As the first rung on the angling coaching ladder, providing progression opportunities for potential coaches.

What can candidates use the L1CCA for?

  • To gain paid or unpaid employment as an assistant to an appropriately qualified coach, or to coach angling.
  • As part of the development of a credible CV for employment in the sport and recreation industry.
  • As evidence towards the achievement of a Level 1 N/SVQ in Sport and Recreation.
  • As a stepping-stone to the 1st4sport Level 2 Certificate in Coaching Angling (L2CCA).

Structure, delivery and assessment of the L1CCA

Qualification Structure

The L1CCA is one of the many optional pathways attached to the 1st4sport Level 1 Certificate in Coaching. The Level 1 Certificate in Coaching is composed of three mandatory units and a number of sport-specific optional pathway units, one of which is coaching angling (optional unit 11). The combination of the angling coaching unit with the three mandatory units creates the Level 1 Certificate in Coaching Angling. Candidates who have completed the 1st4sport Level 1 Certificate in Coaching via one optional pathway, may be able to claim APL for certain aspects of another pathway.

The qualification is composed of the following four units:

  • Unit 1 – Introduction to Safe and Ethical Coaching (QCA Unit No: M/103/5014)
  • Unit 2 – Prepare to Deliver Coaching Activities (QCA Unit No: T/103/5015)
  • Unit 3 – Deliver and Review Coaching Activities (QCA Unit No: A/103/5016)
  • Unit 11 – Coaching Angling (QCA Unit No: R/103/8312)

NB: To complete the L1CCA, candidates must be a minimum of 16 years of age.

It is recommended that a delivery programme for the L1CCA should include a minimum of 30 notional guided learning hours.

Assessment

Internal assessment comprises a series of assessed tasks that explore candidates' understanding of:

  • safe and ethical coaching in angling
  • the preparation required to deliver angling coaching activities
  • the delivery and evaluation of angling coaching activities.

One aspect of the internal assessment includes an observation of a practical coaching activity and evaluation.

Independent assessment comprises of a written multiple-choice paper.

Tutor/Assessor and Internal Verifier Criteria

The generic 1st4sport Qualifications criteria for tutors, assessors and verifiers (see the Centre Recognition Application Pack or the Recognised Centre Handbook) must be adhered to. The additional L1CCA requirements include the following criteria:

Tutors/assessors are required to:

  • have a minimum of an ADB Level 2 Qualification in Coaching Angling or the 1st4sport Level 2 Certificate in Coaching Angling
  • hold or be working towards a 1st4sport Certificate in Tutoring in Sport (CTS) or a recognised teaching award, or have attended a programme of tutor-training matched to nationally recognised standards
  • hold or be working towards completing the ENTO Unit D32/33 or the A1/A2 Assessor Units or the Introduction to Assessment Practice in Sport qualification (IAPS), or have attended a programme of assessor-training matched to nationally recognised standards
  • attend appropriate qualification-specific induction training
  • be an Angling Development Board-accredited tutor/assessor.

Internal verifiers are required to:

  • have a minimum of an ADB Level 2 Coaching Qualification in Coaching Angling or the 1st4sport Level 2 Certificate in Coaching Angling

  • hold or be working towards completing the ENTO Unit D34 or the V1/V2 Verifier Units or the 1st4sport Introduction to Verification Practice in Sport (currently in development)
  • attend appropriate qualification-specific induction training
  • be an Angling Development Board-accredited internal verifier.
