Developed in partnership with FA Learning, the education arm of The Football Association, the 1st4sport Level 2 Award in Leadership through Football (QCF) (L2ALTF) is a brand-new and exciting qualification that will enable young people to develop leadership, personal and thinking skills through supporting the development of grass-roots football.

This unique qualification is a conduit for learners to develop a range of skills as independent enquirers, team workers, self-managers, creative thinkers and effective participators. These skills are developed through an engagement with The FA’s grass-roots football development programmes.

Learners will be introduced to a number of leadership roles, including:

  • leading football activity sessions
  • refereeing small-sided games
  • managing a local small-sided game team
  • contributing to the organisation and delivery of a local football festival/event for young people.

Holders of this Award will be provided with guidance on further opportunities as a sport leader, including how to contribute to grass-roots sport as an administrator, coach, referee, team manager and sport development volunteer.

This qualification may be delivered to any group of young people with access to grass-roots football development opportunities and is approved as part of the additional and specialist learning (ASL) catalogue for the National Diploma in Sport and Active Leisure. Prerequisites

Anyone between the ages of 14 and 19 who is interested in developing leadership skills and would like an introduction to volunteering or a possible career in the sport industry. This is the ideal qualification for those who are interested in an engagement as a:

  • sport administrator
  • coach
  • referee
  • junior team manager
  • sport development volunteer.

Learners are required to be aged 14 years or over, prior to registration. The qualification is not considered to be appropriate for learners over 19 years of age, for whom alternative routes are available.

Approved component of the National Diploma in Sport and Active Leisure

The qualification is a component of the National Diploma in Sport and Active Leisure and is listed in the ASL catalogue for that Diploma, ensuring that it can be included in your ASL provision.

Not just for the Diploma

The 1st4sport Level 2 Award in Leadership through Football (QCF) is available to all 14–19-year-old learners, whether part of a Diploma consortium or not. Its focus on personal development and leadership skills through football makes it an exciting qualification for a wide range of young people.

Progression routes

The qualification is an excellent introduction for those looking to progress within the voluntary or employed world of sport and sport development, with this qualification giving learners a kick-start into the skills of coaching, refereeing, sport administration and development. 1st4sport, through its links with many governing bodies of sport, has developed qualifications to take young learners into this exciting arena.

Who can Deliver and Assess the Qualification?

It is expected that the delivery of the qualification will be led by
individual(s) holding qualified teacher status (QTS) who are practising physical education specialists and have undergone an appropriate (FA-led) induction into the delivery of the qualification. Fees

Fees for the qualification are available on application and are charged per learner, providing registration and certification for the qualification, as well as a 1st4sport Learner Pack and a range of FA Learning resources.

How to Apply

Non-1st4sport recognised centres

If you are not already a 1st4sport recognised centre, you need to apply to become one by completing a Centre Recognition Application Form. You can now do this online through Athena, the 1st4sport online Quality Assurance System where you can also apply to become approved for the qualifications that interest you. To access Athena, simply call us on 0113-290 7610 to receive a unique access code or fill in the Request for Centre Recognition Application Form and we will send you one.

Existing 1st4sport recognised centres

If you are already a 1st4sport recognised centre and would like to seek approval to deliver this qualification, please access Athena and complete the qualification approval process. If you cannot remember your username and password, please contact us at qmt@1st4sportqualifications.com.

QCF

This qualification sits on the new QCF. Further information about the benefits of the new framework can be found by visiting the Ofqual website.

All learners being registered for QCF qualifications are required to have a Unique Learner Number (ULN) issued by the Learner Register. To be approved to offer this QCF qualification, you will need to demonstrate that you can access and verify learners’ ULNs with the Learner Register.
