The L3TMI is awarded by 1st4sport Qualifications and has been developed in partnership with The Football Association’s (The FA) Medical and Exercise Science Department and FA Learning. The L3TMI is accredited at Level 3 on the National Qualifications Framework.

QCA Qualification Accreditation Number: 100/5190/9*.

*This qualification expired on 30 June 2008. 1st4sport will continue to award this qualification to recognised centres as a non-QCA-accredited 1st4sport-awarded certificate until further notice.

Who is the L3TMI for?

Adults (over 18 years of age) with a background in sports therapy who want to build on their existing knowledge of injury treatment. Although the L3TMI has been developed with specific reference to injuries within a football environment, its content can be applied to other field-based sports as a generic sport-related injury qualification.

Learners are recommended to achieve the Level 2 Certificate in the Treatment and Management of Injuries (L2TMI) or have a similar proven level of knowledge and hold a current Emergency Aid Certificate (or equivalent). Those who are working directly with children may be required by their national governing body or their employer to have been positively vetted by the Criminal Records Bureau (CRB).

Why deliver the L3TMI?

  • To provide learners with a focused understanding of how to provide injury treatment and management in a sporting environment and to give them knowledge that can usefully support the provision of support for players in a voluntary or
  • semi-professional club environment.
  • To provide learners with knowledge and application skills that will support and enhance those studying generic sports qualifications such as BTECs, A Levels, HNDs or degrees.
  • As part of a comprehensive programme of sport qualifications including Continuous Professional Development (CPD) opportunities for exiting practitioners.
  • The L3TMI is one of the few accredited injury-based qualifications that can be applied across a variety of field-based sports.

What can learners use the L3TMI for?

  • To gain paid or unpaid employment as a football therapist for an amateur or semi-professional football club.
  • As preparation for working towards individual units of the National Occupational Standards for Sports Therapy (at this time there are no NVQs accredited in sports therapy).
  • To progress on to The FA Treatment and Management of Injury Diploma. For more information on this, please telephone The FA’s Medical and Exercise Science Department on 020-7745 4900.

Structure, Delivery and Assessment of the L3TMI

Qualification Structure

It is recommended that a delivery programme for the L3TMI should include 68 notional guided learning hours.

The qualification is composed of the following three units:

  • Unit 1 – Anatomy and Kinesiology of the Lower and Upper Limb and Code of Ethics for Therapy
  • Unit 2 – Evaluating Injuries Sustained in Playing Sport
  • Unit 3 – The Treatment and Management of Common Injuries

Assessment

Internal assessment comprises:

  • a 25-minute practical assessment
  • oral questioning of knowledge and understanding.

Independent assessment comprises a 45-minute written theory paper covering the knowledge and understanding requirements of all three units of the qualification. The papers are marked by an independent assessor appointed by the approved centre who meets the assessor criteria within the L3TMI Qualification Specification.

For those following a learning programme operating under the auspices of The FA, they will be required to attend The FA’s workshop ‘Child Protection and Best Practice’. Many approved centres run this workshop as part of the L3TMI learning programme. Delivery of this component will require approval from The FA. Tutor, Assessor and Internal Verifier Criteria
