The 1st4sport Level 2 Certificate in Working in the Outdoors is a qualification designed to fill a gap in any outdoor education induction programme. It has been specifically designed to provide foundation knowledge of the outdoors industry to anyone interested in working in it, but especially to learners pursuing a relevant Apprenticeship, as it is the mandatory Technical Certificate for the Apprenticeships and Advanced Apprenticeships via The Outdoors pathway. Thanks to the interactive, creative and practical nature of the qualification (only 40 learning hours), learners are able to increase their confidence levels as they learn about:

  • the outdoor industry
  • their rights and responsibilities as employees
  • the impact of public law and policies on the outdoor industry and the organisation they may work for
  • planning, delivering, reviewing and evaluating outdoor-activity sessions.

The qualification is an excellent first step towards working in the outdoors industry supporting learners’ ability to start gathering activity-specific qualifications and supplement their learning – leading to entry-level employment as activity instructors, assistant instructors, assistantsports coaches and voluntary organisation workers. Those already in employment in the above roles, can use this certificate to enhance their knowledge of the breadth of the industry and gain an accredited qualification.

Anyone over 16 years of age who is interested in working in the outdoors industry. Those learners pursuing an Apprenticeship or Advanced Apprenticeship via the The Outdoors pathway will be especially interested in the qualification as it is the Mandatory Technical Certificate. What are the Learner Prerequisites?

Learners are required to be a minimum of 16 years of age.

How is the Qualification Structured?

The qualification is divided into the following units:

There are 40 recommended learning hours for learners to complete the qualification, of which 20 are guided learning hours.

What are the Fees?

Fees are charged per learner and provide registration and certification for the qualification, as well as a 1st4sport Learner Pack, learning resources and certificate. If you are not already a 1st4sport recognised centre, but would like to deliver the 1st4sport Level 2 Certificate in Working in the Outdoors, you will first need to fill in a Centre Recognition Application Form.

If you are already a 1st4sport recognised centre and would like to seek approval to deliver the 1st4sport Level 2 Certificate in Working in the Outdoors, please access Athena, the 1st4sport quality assurance system, and complete the qualification approval process. If you cannot remember your username and password, please contact us.

We don’t charge you any fees to apply to deliver this qualification.
