The success of the British Olympic rowing team means participation in the sport is forever increasing. In order to sustain such participation rates, more and more qualified coaches are needed. Developed in partnership with the National Source Group for Rowing, the 1st4sport Level 2 Certificate in Coaching Rowing is the first rung on the Amateur Rowing Association’s coaching ladder and provides learners with the necessary knowledge and skills to be able to deliver a series of coaching sessions on the water. The qualification is applicable to coaches using either fixed- or sliding-seat boats and encompasses the health and safety aspects of coaching in a potentially high-risk environment. Holders of this Certificate will be qualified to lead rowing coaching sessions and seek employment as a rowing coach.

Who is the Qualification for?

Anyone over 16 years of age who would like to develop and improve his or her rowing coaching skills. Experienced rowers may decide that they wish to branch out from simply competing and put something back into the sport by undertaking a coaching qualification, enabling them to pass on the knowledge they have gained to those inexperienced in rowing. Students in further or higher education, studying sports-related coaching qualifications, should pursue this qualification as a valuable addition to their portfolio of coaching skills. Club coaches and schoolteachers would also find that this qualification is excellent in supporting their involvement in the sport by qualifying them to lead rowing coaching sessions.

Why Deliver this Qualification?

Developed in partnership with the home country governing bodies of sport and UKCC endorsed

This qualification has been developed with the National Source Group for Rowing, which is made up of representatives from the home country governing bodies of sport for rowing – the Amateur Rowing Association (ARA), the Scottish Amateur Rowing Association and the Welsh Amateur Rowing Association, ensuring the qualification meets the requirements of all of the home nations. This UK-wide standardisation of the delivery of coach education has ensured that the sport has been able to gain UKCC endorsement for the coach education programme within which the qualification sits. The result: you can be confident that this is the only UKCC-endorsed Level 2 rowing coaching qualification available. The 1st4sport qualification is available in England and Wales; a similar qualification is available from the Scottish Qualifications Authority (SQA) for learners in Scotland.

Aids rowing clubs in the achievement of Clubmark

The completion of this qualification can boost any Clubmark (hyperlink) application that any rowing club submits. For Clubmark (hyperlink) to be achieved, appropriately qualified coaches must be in position and so the demand for this qualification is significant.

Participation rates are steadily increasing

The impressive Olympic success of British rowing means participation in the sport is forever increasing. In order to sustain such participation rates, more and more qualified coaches will be needed. With the focus turning to 2012, the desire to create a lasting legacy for the sport exists and this qualification is ideal for helping to create that legacy.
