The dynamic, fast-moving and exciting sport of basketball continues to be very accessible and popular in both school and community sport schemes. Developed in partnership with the National Source Group for Basketball, the 1st4sport Level 2 Certificate in Coaching Basketball develops learners’ basketball coaching skills, ideally from the Level 1, on how to plan, conduct and evaluate basketball coaching sessions so that they can coach basketball to players of all ages. It recognises the necessary knowledge and practical skills needed to produce basketball coaches, providing learners with an opportunity to study and be assessed for both the practical and theoretical aspects of coaching basketball. Successful learners may seek employment as a basketball coach.

Who is the Qualification for?

Anyone over 18 years of age who holds the 1st4sport Level 1 Certificate in Coaching Basketball (or equivalent) and would like to develop and improve his or her basketball coaching skills. Experienced players may decide that they wish to branch out from simply competing and put something back into the sport by undertaking a coaching qualification, enabling them to pass on the knowledge they have gained to those inexperienced in basketball. Students in further or higher education, studying sports-related coaching qualifications, should pursue this qualification as a valuable addition to their portfolio of coaching skills.

This qualification has been developed with the National Source Group for Basketball, which is made up of representatives from the home country governing bodies of sport for basketball – England Basketball, basketballscotland and Basketball Wales. This UK-wide standardisation of the delivery of coach education has ensured that the sport has been able to gain UKCC endorsement for the coach education programme within which the qualification sits. The result: you can be confident that this is the only UKCC-endorsed Level 2 basketball coaching qualification available.

What are the Learner Prerequisites?

Learners are required to:

  • be at least 18 years of age
  • hold the 1st4sport Level 1 Certificate in Coaching Basketball or equivalent
  • have evidence of having successfully attended the sports coach UK ‘Safeguarding and Protecting Children’ workshop or equivalent prior to certification
  • have evidence of having successfully attended an appointed persons first-aid course or equivalent prior to certification.

What are the Fees?

Fees are charged per learner and provide registration and certification for the qualification, as well as a 1st4sport Learner Pack, learning resources and certificate. There are no costs involved in applying or becoming a 1st4sport recognised centre. Further information on fees is available from your qualification application form.

If you are not already a 1st4sport recognised centre, but would like to deliver the 1st4sport Level 2 Certificate in Coaching Basketball, you will first need to fill in a Centre Recognition Application Form.

If you are already a 1st4sport recognised centre and would like to seek approval to deliver the 1st4sport Level 2 Certificate in Coaching Basketball, please access Athena, the 1st4sport quality assurance system, and complete the qualification approval process. If you cannot remember your username and password, please contact us.

We don’t charge you any fees to apply to deliver this qualification.
