There are no costs involved in applying or becoming a 1st4sport recognised centre.
Developed in partnership with the National Source Group for Tennis, the 1st4sport Level 1 Certificate in Coaching Tennis is the first step on the tennis coaching pathway and offers an opportunity for those with little or no experience of coaching to be introduced to the principles of planning, delivering and reviewing coaching activities in tennis. The foundation level of knowledge provided by this qualification helps learners to understand how to effectively assist more qualified coaches, delivering aspects of coaching sessions, normally under direct supervision. Holders of this Certificate can gain employment as an assistant to an appropriately qualified club coach.

Who is the Qualification for?
Anyone over 16 years of age who has an interest in tennis and would like to develop and improve his or her coaching skills. Parents of children playing tennis who would like to become more involved. Sports centre staff, teachers, youth workers and volunteers would also find that this qualification supported their involvement in the sport. Students in further or higher education, studying sports-related coaching qualifications, should pursue this Certificate as a valuable addition to their portfolio of coaching skills.

Developed with the National Source Group for Tennis and UKCC endorsed
This qualification has been developed with the National Source Group for Tennis, which is made up of representatives from the home country governing bodies of sport for tennis – the Lawn Tennis Association (LTA), Tennis Scotland, Tennis Wales and the British Tennis Coaches Association (BTCA). This UK-wide standardisation of the delivery of coach education has ensured that the sport has been able to gain UKCC endorsement for the coach education programme within which the qualification sits. The result: you can be confident that this is the only UKCC-endorsed Level 1 tennis coaching qualification available.
Provides a progression route for coaches
The 1st4sport Level 1 Certificate in Coaching Tennis is the first rung on the tennis coaching ladder. Why not offer the Level 2 qualification and give budding tennis coaches clear progression?

Eligible for funding

What are the Learner Prerequisites?
Learners are required to:
- be a minimum of 17 years of age
- have previous experience of playing the sport or to be able to demonstrate knowledge and understanding of the theory and practice of playing tennis
- have attended the LTA Child Protection Workshop or equivalent prior to certification
- have confirmation of receipt of a positive CRB check via the LTA mechanism prior to certification.

The qualification is divided into the following units:

What are the Fees?
Fees are charged per learner and provide registration and certification for the qualification, as well as a 1st4sport Learner Pack, learning resources and certificate. There are no costs involved in applying to deliver the qualification or becoming a 1st4sport recognised centre. Further information on fees is available in your qualification application pack.

How do I Apply?
If you are not already a 1st4sport recognised centre, but would like to deliver the 1st4sport Level 1 Certificate in Coaching Tennis, you will first need to fill in a Centre Recognition Application Form.

If you are already a 1st4sport recognised centre and would like to seek approval to deliver the 1st4sport Level 1 Certificate in Coaching Tennis, please access Athena, the 1st4sport quality assurance system, and complete the qualification approval process. If you cannot remember your username and password, please contact us.
We don’t charge you any fees to apply to deliver this qualification.
