A technical, fast and physically demanding game, badminton is a very popular participation sporting activity. Developed in partnership with the
National Source Group for Badminton, the 1st4sport Level 1 Certificate in Coaching Badminton is the first step on the badminton coaching pathway and offers an opportunity for those with little or no experience of coaching to be introduced to the principles of planning, delivering and reviewing coaching activities in badminton. The foundation level of knowledge recognised in this qualification helps learners to understand how to effectively assist more qualified coaches, delivering aspects of coaching sessions, normally under direct supervision. Holders of this Certificate can gain employment as an assistant to an appropriately qualified club coach.

Who is the Qualification for?
Anyone over 16 years of age who has an interest in badminton and would like to develop and improve his or her coaching skills. Students in further or higher education, studying sports-related coaching qualifications, should pursue this qualification as a valuable addition to their portfolio of coaching skills. Parents of children playing badminton who would like to become more involved, sports-centre staff, teachers, youth workers and volunteers would also find that this qualification supported their involvement in the sport.

The 1st4sport Level 1 Certificate in Coaching Badminton is the first rung on the badminton coaching ladder. Why not offer the full progressive suite and allow budding badminton coaches clear progression from Level 1 to Level 3?

Badminton is an indoor sport, ideally suited to the weather in the UK. This makes it a popular participation sporting activity.
Developed with the National Source Group for Badminton
This qualification has been developed with the National Source Group for Badminton, which is made up of representatives from the home country governing bodies of sport for badminton – the Welsh Badminton Union, BADMINTONscotland, and BADMINTON England. This UK-wide standardisation of the delivery of coach education has ensured that the sport has been able to gain UKCC endorsement for the coach education programme within which the qualification sits. The result: you can be confident that this is the only UKCC-endorsed Level 1 badminton coaching qualification available.

By offering learners access to, and involvement in, the sport of badminton, it helps you form part of a structured and progressive programme for sports coaching and other related qualifications.
Eligible for funding
The 1st4sport Level 1 Certificate in Coaching Badminton is a nationally recognised qualification that can attract government funding to support the delivery and assessment of the award. What are the Learner Prerequisites?
Learners are required to:
- be at least 16 years of age
- have some experience of playing the game and be able to participate in a short rally or be able to demonstrate knowledge and understanding of what is required when playing the game and the technicalities required when participating in a short rally.
How is the Qualification Structured?
The qualification is divided into the following units:

What are the Fees?
Fees are charged per learner and provide registration and certification for the qualification, as well as a 1st4sport Learner Pack, learning resources and certificate. There are no costs involved in applying or becoming a 1st4sport recognised centre. Further information on fees is available from your qualification application form.

How do I apply?
If you are not already a 1st4sport recognised centre but would like to deliver the 1st4sport Level 1 Certificate in Coaching Badminton, you will first need to fill in a Centre Recognition Application Form.
To apply, please request a Centre Recognition Application Form.
If you are already a 1st4sport recognised centre and would like to seek approval to deliver the 1st4sport Level 1 Certificate in Coaching Badminton, please access Athena, the 1st4sport quality assurance system, and complete the qualification approval process. If you cannot remember your username and password, please contact us.
We don’t charge you any fees to apply to deliver this qualification.
