The L2IOA is awarded by 1st4sport Qualifications and has been developed in consultation with SkillsActive – the Sector Skills Council for Active Leisure and Learning. It is accredited at Level 2 on the National Qualifications Framework. The qualification is a mandatory technical certificate component for an apprenticeship in the active leisure and learning industry and is appropriate for anyone who has an interest in working in the industry. This qualification is not available in Scotland, although an equivalent version will be available from the Scottish Qualifications Authority (SQA).
For further information on the accredited status of the L2IOA, please log on to the QCA-accredited qualifications website at www.accreditedqualifications.org.uk.
Is the L2IOA for me?
If you are following a training programme for an apprenticeship in the active leisure and learning industry, the qualification forms the mandatory technical certificate component of that apprenticeship. It is also very applicable for young people working in the leisure industry who are looking for a good grounding in the breadth of the industry, and an opportunity to explore the available careers.
The L2IOA has been developed to provide you with an appropriate understanding of your employment rights and responsibilities, the organisation you work in and how the organisation sits within the active leisure and learning industry. It also enables you to explore the industry you are working in.
Why should I study the L2IOA?
It will allow you to:
- gain a clear understanding of the industry in which you are working
- develop an appropriate understanding of your employment rights and responsibilities, the organisation you work in and how the organisation sits within the active leisure and learning industry
- support your completion of an apprenticeship in the active leisure and learning industry.
What can I use the L2IOA for?
- As evidence towards an apprenticeship or NVQ in a sector of the active leisure and learning industry.
- As an introduction, if you are aspiring to work in the industry.
- To gain paid or unpaid employment at entry level within a sector of the industry.
- To demonstrate to employers your understanding of employment rights and responsibilities; it is also proof that you have a clear appreciation and understanding of the industry as a whole, your particular sector of the industry and, more specifically, your own organisation.
What will I learn?
The aim of the Level 2 Certificate in Industry and Organisational Awareness for the Active Leisure and Learning Industry is to provide you with an appropriate depth of knowledge about:
- your rights and responsibilities as an employee
- the active leisure and learning industry
- the impact of public law and policies on the active leisure and learning industry and the organisation/company for which you work.
How will my learning programme be structured?
Learning programmes are usually designed by the recognised centre that delivers the qualification. They may, therefore, vary in length and format. Depending on the needs of their learners, centres can offer intensive courses or a series of learning events over a number of days. Whatever the timescale, all learning programmes should include the following phases:
- An induction to the qualification and your programme of learning and assessment.
- A learning programme that meets your needs.
- A programme of assessment spread across the course.
At the end of the programme, you will be provided with formal feedback on your performance and an action plan for your further development.
What will my assessment involve?
Internal assessment consists of:
- a number of unit specific research tasks and assignments, some of which will require you to source evidence or information from your workplace.
Independent assessment consists of:
- complete a single identified task which will be independently assessed.
Where can I access the qualification?
The qualification is delivered by 1st4sport Qualifications’ recognised centres, not all of which offer open courses to members of the public. Your first port of call to access a course should be to contact 1st4sport Qualifications. Contact details are provided below.
How much will the qualification cost me?

Where fees are charged, they should entitle you to a programme of learning and assessment, registration and certification for the qualification, a 1st4sport Qualifications Candidate Pack and appropriate learning resource.
