The L3CTALS is awarded by 1st4sport Qualifications and has been developed in partnership with the Talented Athlete Scholarship Scheme (TASS), with the support of UK Sport. It is accredited at Level 3 on the National Qualifications Framework. For further information on the accredited status of the L3CTALS, please log on to the QCA-accredited qualifications website at www.accreditedqualifications.org.uk.
Is the L3CTALS for me?
If you are an adult (over 18 years of age) with knowledge of the performance-sport environment and a desire to assist young athletes, but not necessarily coach them, and wish to attain a nationally accredited professional qualification, then the L3CTALS is designed for you.
Although the L3CTALS has been developed in partnership with TASS, its content can also be applied to supporting athletes involved in governing body of sport talent squads, professional sports academies, the Youth Sport Trust Gifted and Talented scheme and AASE athletes, among others.
Why should I study the L3CTALS?
It provides you with an excellent grounding in both the theoretical and practical aspects of mentoring and supporting young talented athletes. You will gain the knowledge and skills to effectively mentor and guide candidates, through periods of transition, within their educational and sporting careers.
What can I use the L3CTALS for?
- To become a qualified talented athlete lifestyle support mentor.
- To progress to a higher-level qualification, such as the foundation degree currently being developed by UK Sport.
What will I learn?
Your learning programme will develop your understanding of:
- funding and performance pathways within sport
- support-service networks that are relevant to talented athletes
- how to communicate effectively with young athletes
- how to identify and plan to overcome periods of conflict within a talented athlete’s career
- how to identify and plan to overcome periods of transition within a talented athlete’s career
- how to deliver drugs awareness workshops to young talented athletes.
How will my learning programme be structured?
Learning programmes are usually designed by the recognised centre that delivers the qualification. They may, therefore, vary in length and format. Depending on your needs, delivery centres can offer intensive courses, or a series of learning events, over a period of weeks. Whatever the timescale, all learning programmes should include the following phases:
- an induction process that will provide you with an introduction to the qualification and ongoing support throughout the programme of training and extended study, to ensure you understand the requirements of the qualification. In addition, you will receive support and guidance on accessing learning resources that support the development of your knowledge
- a programme of training, during which you will be provided with the practical skills, knowledge and understanding required to enable you to fulfil the role§ achievement of knowledge via a structured programme of learning and/or home study, and/or distance learning modules
- further development of your application of the role of a talented athlete lifestyle support mentor.
At the end of the programme, you will be provided with formal feedback on your performance and an action plan for further development.
What will my assessment involve?
The L3CTALS assessment will require you to:
- complete a series of internally assessed tasks based around the performance-sport environment
- develop a support network to use when signposting athletes to relevant organisations
- complete role plays to demonstrate your mentoring skills
- complete a six-month case study of working with a talented athlete in a real environment.
