The L2CCRU is awarded by 1st4sport Qualifications and has been developed in partnership with the National Source Group for Rugby Union, which is composed of the Rugby Football Union (RFU), Welsh Rugby Union (WRU) and Scottish Rugby (SRU). This qualification is not available in Scotland, although an equivalent version will be available from the Scottish Qualifications Authority (SQA).
The L2CCRU is accredited at Level 2 on the National Qualifications Framework and forms part of rugby union's UK Coaching Certificate (UKCC) endorsed coach education programme. For further information on the accredited status of the L2CCRU, please log on to the QCA-accredited qualifications website at www.accreditedqualifications.org.uk.

Is the L2CCRU for me?
The L2CCRU is designed for adults (over 18 years of age) who have a basic understanding of rugby union and coaching and want to coach the sport to adults or children. Students in further or higher education studying a sports-related qualification might also consider pursuing this vocational qualification as the first step on the coaching ladder.
If your experience of coaching or the sport is limited, you are encouraged to consider the 1st4sport Level 1 Certificate in Coaching Rugby Union (L1CCRU) before applying for Level 2.
Why should I study the L2CCRU?
- To help people develop their rugby union skills correctly and safely.
- To support the development of a coaching programme within a club.
- As a rung on the RFU or WRU coaching ladder.
What can I use the L2CCRU for?
- To gain paid or unpaid employment as a club or school team coach.
- As part of the development of a credible CV for employment in the sport and recreation industry.
- As a stepping-stone to the 1st4sport Level 3 Certificate in Coaching Rugby Union (L3CCRU).
Qualified coaches are encouraged to attend aspects of the RFU Regional Coach Development Programme* or the RFU Constituent Body (CB) Programme* administered by RFU-affiliated county bodies. A similar programme is available via the offices of WRU** and their regions.

What will I learn?
Your learning programme will develop your understanding of:
- safety and ethics in rugby union
- how to plan rugby union coaching sessions
- how to deliver and evaluate safe and effective rugby union coaching sessions
- the development and promotion of rugby union as a sport.
How will my learning programme be structured?
Learning programmes are usually designed by the approved centre that delivers the qualification. They may, therefore, vary in length and format. Depending on your needs, delivery centres can offer intensive courses or a series of learning events over a number of weekends. Whatever the timescale, all learning programmes should include the following phases:
- An induction to the qualification and your programme of learning and assessment.
- A learning programme that meets your needs, which will be divided into two parts, the main course of training, after which you will be required to practice your coaching and the gathering of evidence prior to a final assessment.
- A programme of assessment spread across the course, culminating in a final assessment of you delivering a coaching session observed by an appropriately qualified assessor.
At the end of the programme, you will be provided with formal feedback on your performance and an action plan for your further development.
What will my assessment involve?
The L2CCRU assessment will require you to:
- produce session plans to support the assessment of performance across the breadth of the sport
- complete a series of tasks that take the form of assignments/project work to cover the breadth of the knowledge of the qualification
- answer oral and written questions to illustrate your knowledge and understanding
- coach a session taken from the Practical Syllabus, during which you will be observed, and answer oral questions on aspects of your performance, underpinning knowledge, understanding and application.
Where can I access the qualification?
The qualification is delivered by 1st4sport Qualifications’ approved centres, not all of whom offer open courses to members of the public. Your first port of call to access a course should be to contact the appropriate national governing body. Contact details are provided below.
How much will the qualification cost me?
Approved centres offering this qualification determine their own fees and they will vary from centre to centre. The fees charged should entitle you to a programme of learning and assessment, registration and certification for the qualification, a 1st4sport Qualifications Candidate Pack and appropriate learning resource. For further information on the costs of courses, please contact an approved centre.
