1st4sport Level 3 Certificate in Working in the Outdoors (L3CWO)

Working in the Outdoors

Overview

The L3CWO is awarded by 1st4sport Qualifications and is accredited at Level 3 on the National Qualifications Framework. The qualification is a mandatory technical certificate component for an apprenticeship in the outdoor industry, and is appropriate for anyone who is currently working in the outdoor industry and has responsibility for, or would like to advance into, managing the delivery of outdoor programmes. This qualification is not available in Scotland, although an equivalent version will be available from the Scottish Qualifications Authority (SQA).

For further information on the accredited status of the L3CWO, please log on to the Ofqual-accredited qualifications website at www.accreditedqualifications.org.uk.

Criteria

Some experience of work or working in the industry is recomended.

If you are following a training programme for an apprenticeship in the outdoor industry, the qualification forms the mandatory technical certificate component of that apprenticeship. It is also very applicable for people working in the outdoor industry who are looking to advance their career into the management and delivery of outdoor programmes, and an opportunity to explore the available careers.

The L3CWO has been developed to provide you with an appropriate understanding of your employment rights and responsibilities, the organisation you work in and how the organisation sits within the outdoor industry. It also enables you to develop your skills in managing the delivery of an outdoor programme.

Why Study?

It will allow you to:

  • gain a clear understanding of the outdoor industry
  • develop an appropriate understanding of your employment rights and responsibilities, the organisation you work in and how the organisation sits within the outdoor industry
  • support your completion of an apprenticeship in the outdoor industry.

What can I use the L3CWO for?

  • As evidence towards an apprenticeship or NVQ in the outdoor industry.
  • As an introduction to managing the delivery of outdoor programmes within the industry.
  • To gain paid or unpaid employment within the outdoor industry.
  • To demonstrate to employers your understanding of employment rights and responsibilities – it is also proof that you have a clear appreciation and understanding of the industry and your own organisation.

Outline

The aim of the L3CWO is to provide you with an appropriate depth of knowledge about:

  • your rights and responsibilities as an employee
  • the outdoor industry
  • the impact of public law and policies on the outdoor industry and the organisation/company for which you work
  • planning, delivering, reviewing and evaluating outdoor programmes.

How will my learning programme be structured?

Learning programmes are usually designed by the recognised centre that delivers the qualification. They may, therefore, vary in length and format. Depending on the needs of their learners, centres can offer intensive courses or a series of learning events over a number of days. Whatever the timescale, all learning programmes should include the following phases:

  • an induction to the qualification and your programme of learning and assessment
  • a learning programme that meets your needs
  • a programme of assessment spread across the course.

At the end of the programme, you will be provided with formal feedback on your performance and an action plan for your further development.

Assessment

The L3CWO assessment will require you to:

  • complete a number of unit-specific research tasks and assignments, some of which will require you to source evidence or information from your workplace. These will be internally assessed
  • undertake one internally assessed observation of your management of the delivery of an outdoor programme
  • complete a single, identified task that will be independently assessed.

Fees

Recognised centres offering this qualification determine their own fees and they will vary from centre to centre. If the qualification is delivered as part of an apprenticeship, it is unlikely that there will be a charge. Where fees are charged, they should entitle you to a programme of learning and assessment, registration and certification for the qualification, a 1st4sport Qualifications’ Learner Pack and appropriate learning resource. For further information on the costs of courses, please contact a recognised centre.
