Overview

The 1st4sport Level 2 Certificate in the Principles and Preparations for Coaching Sport (QCF) is awarded by 1st4sport Qualifications and has been developed in partnership with industry experts in the area of coaching sport and SkillsActive – the Sector Skills Council for Active Leisure and Learning.

The 1st4sport Level 2 Certificate in the Principles and Preparations for Coaching Sport (QCF) is regulated at Level 2 on the Qualifications and Credit Framework (QCF) and forms part of all UK Coaching Certificate (UKCC) endorsed coaching qualifications at Level 2. Criteria

If you are over 14 years of age and have an interest in coaching sport, then the 1st4sport Level 2 Certificate in the Principles and Preparations for Coaching Sport (QCF) is designed for you.

Why Study?

It forms part of a structured and progressive programme for understanding the principles of coaching sport and supports all UKCC sport-specific coaching qualifications, offering you access and involvement in introducing others to the sport.

  • To support progression toward the achievement of a sport-specific UKCC coaching qualification.

  • As a stepping stone to the 1st4sport Level 3 Award in the Principles of Coaching Sport (QCF).

Outline

On successful completion of the 1st4sport Level 2 Award in the Principles and Preparations for Coaching Sport (QCF), you should:

  • understand the fundamentals of coaching sport
  • understand how to develop participants through coaching sport
  • support participants’ lifestyle through coaching sport
  • understand the principles of safe and equitable coaching practice
  • be able to assist in the delivery of a sports activity session.

How will my learning programme be structured?

Learning programmes are usually designed by the recognised centre that delivers the qualification. They may, therefore, vary in length and format. Depending on your needs, recognised centres can offer intensive courses, or a series of learning events over a period of weeks. Whatever the timescales, all learning programmes should include the following phases:

  • An induction to the qualification and your programme of learning and assessment
  • A learning programme that meets your needs, focusing on the theory and practice of coaching sport
  • A programme of assessment, spread throughout the course, including observations of your coaching by an appropriately qualified assessor.
  • Formal feedback on your performance at the end of the programme and an action plan for your further development.

Assessment

The 1st4sport Level 2 Certificate in the Principles and Preparations for Coaching Sport (QCF) assessment will require you to:

  • understand the role of a sports coach
  • understand the coaching process
  • understand how different coaching styles can support different participant learning styles
  • understand the importance of communication when coaching sport
  • understand the health and safety requirements when coaching sport
  • have an understanding of safeguarding children and vulnerable adults
  • understand the requirements for equality and diversity when coaching sport
  • understand sports science, which supports the coaching role
  • understand nutrition and hydration principles that support participant achievement
  • understand the impact of taking drugs in sport
  • be able to deliver of a series of sessions contained within a coaching programme.

Fees

Recognised centres offering this qualification determine their own fees and they will vary from centre to centre. The fees charged should entitle you to a programme of learning and assessment, registration and certification for the qualification and a 1st4sport Learner Pack.
