Overview

The 1st4sport Level 2 Award in Introductory Work in the Outdoors (QCF) is awarded by 1st4sport Qualifications. The qualification is a vocational qualification that provides learners with the opportunity to study and be assessed on the knowledge and skills required for working in the outdoor industry.

The 1st4sport Level 2 Award in Introductory Work in the Outdoors (QCF) is regulated at Level 2 on the Qualifications and Credit Framework (QCF) and forms part of 1st4sport’s suite of outdoor-related qualifications. Criteria

If you are over 16 years of age and would like to develop your skills and understanding of working in the outdoor industry, then the 1st4sport Level 2 Award in Introductory Work in the Outdoors (QCF) is designed for you.

Why Study?

It will allow you to gain an understanding of:

  • general induction for outdoor centre staff
  • the essentials of customer care for outdoor centre staff

and depending on which optional unit group is selected:

  • organising participants at an outdoor centre
  • working in hospitality and support at an outdoor centre
  • organising an activity session at an outdoor centre
  • responding to health emergencies for outdoor centre staff.

What can I use it for?

  • To enable you to top up existing knowledge.
  • As an effective CV enhancer.
  • To gain paid or unpaid employment within the outdoor industry.

Outline

On successful completion of the 1st4sport Level 2 Award in Introductory Work in the Outdoors (QCF), you will:

  • understand the organisation and how it operates in the industry sector
  • understand the organisation’s procedures and rules
  • know about the terms and conditions of employment
  • understand the basic principles of customer care relevant to an outdoor centre context
  • be able to deliver the basic principles of customer care relevant to an outdoor centre context.

If Optional Unit Group 1 is selected, you will also:

  • understand how to organise for and deal with participants’ arrival and welcome
  • be able to organise for and deal with participants’ arrival and welcome
  • understand how to support participants during their stay
  • be able to support participants during their stay
  • know how to organise participants’ departure
  • be able to organise participants’ departure
  • be able to review own performance in the role.

If Optional Unit Group 2 is selected, you will also:

  • understand health and safety issues and organisational standards related to own role in the workplace
  • be able to work with others
  • understand how to use role-related equipment appropriately and safely
  • be able to use role-related equipment appropriately and safely
  • be able to deliver the tasks and responsibilities in own job description.

If Optional Unit Group 3 is selected, you will also:

  • understand how to plan an activity session
  • understand how to prepare an activity session
  • be able to prepare an activity session
  • understand how to lead an activity session
  • be able to lead an activity session
  • understand how to conclude and review an activity session
  • be able to conclude and review an activity session
  • understand the basic principles of emergency first aid
  • be able to provide first assistance and treatment for a casualty
  • understand how to establish and maintain a fully equipped first aid kit.

How will my learning programme be structured?

Learning programmes are usually designed by the recognised centre that delivers the qualification. They may, therefore, vary in length and format. Depending on the needs of their learners, centres can offer intensive courses or a series of learning events over a number of days. Whatever the timescale, all learning programmes should include the following phases:

  • an induction to the qualification and your programme of learning and assessment
  • a learning programme that meets your needs
  • a programme of assessment spread across the course.

At the end of the programme, you will be provided with formal feedback on your performance and an action plan for your further development.

Assessment

The 1st4sport Level 2 Award in Introductory Work in the Outdoors (QCF) will require you to undergo formal assessment to fully meet the qualification requirements, assessed by a suitably qualified tutor/assessor from the recognised centre. The following methods will be used to assess you during your achievement of the qualification:

  • assignments and project work
  • oral questioning (when appropriate)
  • written tasks
  • practical observation.

Fees

Recognised centres offering this qualification determine their own fees, and they will vary from centre to centre. The fees charged should entitle you to a programme of learning and assessment, registration and certification for the qualification, a 1st4sport Learner Pack and an appropriate learning resource. For further information on the costs of courses, please contact a recognised centre. Opportunities for funding may be available via a recognised centre, if you are eligible.
