Overview

The 1st4sport Functional Skills Qualification in English at Level 1 is awarded by 1st4sport Qualifications and has been developed to support learners in the active leisure, learning and well-being sector.

The 1st4sport Functional Skills Qualification in English at Level 1 is regulated at Level 1 on the National Qualifications Framework (NQF) and supports a number of wider educational programmes such as apprenticeships and diplomas in the active leisure, learning and well-being sector. Criteria

If you are over 14 years of age and are looking to gain a nationally recognised qualification in English at Level 1, then the 1st4sport Functional Skills Qualification in English at Level 1 is for you.

Why Study?

The qualification provides you with a nationally recognised qualification in English at Level 1, supporting the development of the three following areas:

  • Speaking, listening and communication
  • Reading
  • Writing

This qualification is seen as an equivalent to a GCSE grade D–G.

Outline

On successful completion of the 1st4sport Functional Skills Qualification in English at Level 1 you will have learnt how to communicate more effectively using both verbal and non-verbal methods as well as learning valuable reading skills.

How will my programme be structured?

Programmes are usually designed by the recognised centres that deliver the qualification. They may, therefore, vary in length and format. Depending on your needs, delivery centres can offer intensive courses or a series of events over a period of weeks. Whatever the timescales, all programmes should include the following phases:

  • An induction to the qualification
  • A programme learning providing covering the syllabus of the qualifications
  • Internal assessment of speaking, listening and communication – normally done via assessor observation
  • An external paper providing an assessment of both reading and writing skills
  • At the end of the programme, you will be provided with a feedback/evaluation session detailing an action plan for further development.

Assessment

The 1st4sport Functional Skills Qualification in English at Level 1 comprises of two forms of assessment. These are as follows:

Internal assessment: This internal assessment looks to assess your performance of speaking, listening and communication. This is normally done by your recognised centre observing you in discussions with others.

External assessment: The external assessment requires you to complete an exam paper that focuses on the both reading and writing skills.

Fees

Recognised centres offering this qualification determine their own fees, and they will vary from centre to centre. The fees charged should entitle you to a programme of learning and assessment, registration and certification for the qualification.
