Overview
The 1st4sport Level 2 Certificate in Coaching Handball (QCF) is awarded by 1st4sport Qualifications. It has been developed in partnership with the England Handball Association (EHA) and endorsed by the European Handball Federation. This qualification is not available in Scotland, although an equivalent version may be available from the Scottish Qualifications Authority (SQA).
The 1st4sport Level 2 Certificate in Coaching Handball (QCF) is regulated at Level 2 on the Qualifications and Credit Framework (QCF) and forms part of handball’s UK Coaching Certificate (UKCC) endorsed coach education programme. Criteria
If you are over 16 years of age and either have successfully completed one of the following courses:
- the EHA Level 1 Certificate in Coaching Handball, the EHA Introduction to Teaching Handball
- the EHA Teachers Award KS2 Module
or can evidence handball coaching qualifications of an equivalent standard or above from another handball-playing country, then the 1st4sport Level 2 Certificate in Coaching Handball (QCF) is designed for you.

Outline
On successful completion of the 1st4sport Level 2 Certificate in Coaching Handball (QCF), you should:
- understand the fundamentals of coaching sport
- understand how to develop participants through coaching sport
- understand how to support participants’ lifestyles through coaching sport
- understand the principles of safe and equitable coaching practice
- be able to plan a series of handball coaching sessions
- be able to prepare the handball coaching environment
- be able to deliver a series of handball coaching sessions
- be able to monitor and evaluate handball coaching sessions.
How will my learning programme be structured?
Learning programmes are usually designed by the recognised centre that delivers the qualification. They may, therefore, vary in length and format. Depending on your needs, delivery centres can offer intensive courses or a series of learning events over a period of weeks. Whatever the timescale, all learning programmes should include the following phases:
- an induction to the qualification and your programme of learning and assessment
- a learning programme that meets your needs, focusing on the theory and practice of coaching handball
- a programme of assessment, spread throughout the course, including observations of your coaching by an appropriately qualified assessor.
At the end of the programme, you will be provided with formal feedback on your performance and an action plan for your further development.
Assessment
The 1st4sport Level 2 Certificate in Coaching Handball (QCF) assessment will require you to:
- create, develop and implement a personal action plan
- complete venue risk assessments for each venue used for coaching
- gather player information to support effective planning
- deliver a group coaching programme
- deliver an individual coaching programme
- be observed coaching an individual session
- complete a series of underpinning theory questions relating to:
- coaching practice
- player development
- technical skills, tactical knowledge and laws of the game
- fitness, nutrition and ethics in sport
- safeguarding and protecting children and vulnerable adults
- be observed coaching a group session.
Fees
Recognised centres offering this qualification determine their own fees, and they will vary from centre to centre. The fees charged should entitle you to a programme of learning and assessment, registration and certification for the qualification, a 1st4sport Learner Pack and an appropriate learning resource.
