Level 3 Certificate in Coaching Basketball

Overview

The 1st4sport Level 3 Certificate in Coaching Basketball (QCF) is awarded by 1st4sport Qualifications and has been developed in partnership with the National Source Group for Basketball. The 1st4sport Level 3 Certificate in Coaching Basketball (QCF) is accredited at Level 3 on the Qualifications and Credit Framework (QCF). Criteria

If you are an adult (over 18 years of age) and:
  • hold the 1st4sport Level 2 Certificate in Coaching Basketball (QCF) or equivalent
  • are coaching and training the same team in a club/team environment with regular training sessions and have competitive matches on a regular basis
  • have experience of coaching the same group of players for a full season within the past three years
  • have experience of coaching a variety of players at more than one element of the player pathway and at a variety of age groups

and

  • would like to coach at a higher level and be involved in the delivery of annual coaching programmes within a club

Your learning programme will develop your understanding of:

  • how to ensure participants’ safety during sport-specific coaching sessions
  • how to ensure equitable coaching of sport-specific activities
  • the role of the coach when planning, implementing, analysing and revising sport-specific annual coaching programmes
  • the coaching process
  • how to utilise a range of learning and behaviour management techniques
  • the principles and application of self-reflection and reflecting on feedback
  • the principles and processes involved in planning and periodisation within annual coaching programmes
  • the stages of participant development
  • the development of skill through sport-specific annual coaching programmes
  • how to conduct performance evaluation
  • how to support participants’ physical conditioning within sport-specific annual coaching programmes
  • how to provide participants with nutritional advice within sport-specific annual coaching programmes
  • how to develop participants’ mental skills within sport-specific annual coaching programmes
  • how to provide participants with lifestyle support within sport-specific annual coaching programmes
  • establishing the key basketball performance factors and players’ needs
  • involving players in the analysis of the collected information
  • planning basketball programme goals for players based on collected information
  • designing and planning basketball coaching programmes to achieve players’ goals
  • identifying and accessing resources to support the delivery of programmes
  • planning for the evaluation of programmes
  • establishing and maintaining the safety of the basketball coaching environment during the delivery of coaching programmes
  • establishing and maintaining relationships with players and others involved in the delivery of programmes

How will my learning programme be structured?

Learning programmes are usually designed by the recognised centre that delivers the qualification. They may, therefore, vary in length and format. Depending on your needs, delivery centres can offer intensive courses or a series of learning events over a period of weeks. Whatever the timescale, all learning programmes should include the following phases:

  • an induction to the qualification and your programme of learning and assessment
  • a learning programme which meets your needs, focusing on the theory and practice of coaching basketball
  • a programme of assessment, spread throughout the course, including observations of your coaching by an appropriately qualified assessor.

At the end of the programme, you will be provided with formal feedback on your performance and an action plan for your further development.

Assessment

The 1st4sport Level 3 Certificate in Coaching Basketball (QCF) assessment will require you to:

  • have an appropriate understanding of the Level 3 knowledge units and the specific technical knowledge underpinning the coaching of basketball, which will be assessed via performance, simulation, tasks and assignments
  • produce a performance profile for a minimum of two players in basketball
  • produce a basketball coaching programme for a minimum of two players
  • produce a detailed plan of a discrete cycle or phase (minimum of eight weeks) associated with an aspect of the basketball coaching programme
  • produce a minimum of eight weeks of coaching session plans within the discrete cycle or phase associated with an aspect of the basketball coaching programme
  • produce a recorded plan for the ongoing evaluation of the basketball coaching programme
  • produce a recorded plan for the ongoing performance and/or development review for two players
  • produce a record of the management of a safe coaching environment over a minimum period of eight weeks
  • deliver a minimum of eight weeks of basketball coaching sessions within the discrete cycle or phase associated with an aspect of the basketball coaching programme
  • deliver a minimum of two basketball coaching sessions, which must be observed by an appropriately qualified assessor on separate occasions
  • record player performance and/or development reviews and associated action plans for a minimum of two players during the basketball coaching programme
  • produce a personal action plan to develop your coaching practice based upon the delivery of a detailed training cycle or phase
  • produce an action plan to develop coaching practice for others involved in supporting the basketball coaching programme.

Fees

Recognised centres offering this qualification determine their own fees and they will vary from centre to centre. The fees charged should entitle you to a programme of learning and assessment, registration and certification for the qualification, a 1st4sport Qualifications Learner Pack and an appropriate learning resource. Opportunities for funding may be available via a recognised centre, if you are eligible.
