1st4sport Level 3 Certificate in Coaching Hockey (L3CCH)

Coaching Hockey

The L3CCH is awarded by 1st4sport Qualifications and has been developed in partnership with Hockey Coaching UK. The L3CCH is accredited at Level 3 on the National Qualifications Framework. For further information on the accredited status of the L3CCH, please log on to the QCA-accredited qualifications website at www.accreditedqualifications.org.uk.

Who is the L3CCH for?

If you are an adult (over 18 years of age), an experienced Level 2 hockey coach who holds a recognised current first aid certificate and has attended a recognised child protection training course, and would like to coach at a higher level and be involved in the delivery of annual coaching programmes within a club, then the L3CCH is designed for you.

Why should I study the L3CCH?

It forms part of a structured and progressive programme of sports coaching and other related qualifications, offering you access, and involvement in introducing others, to the sport of hockey.

What can I use the L3CCH for?

  • To gain paid or unpaid employment as a hockey coach.
  • As preparation for in-depth working with a team.
  • As part of the development of a credible CV for employment in the sport and recreation industry.

What will I learn?

Your learning programme will develop your understanding of:

  • hockey coaching principles and ethics
  • the technical and tactical aspects of coaching the sport at this level
  • how to plan and develop hockey coaching programmes
  • how to manage and implement hockey coaching programmes
  • the background science and understanding that underpins coaching programmes
  • how to conduct hockey coaching sessions within your coaching programme
  • how to effectively evaluate your activities and develop a plan for your further development as a coach.

How will my learning programme be structured?

Learning programmes are usually designed by the recognised centre that delivers the qualification. They may, therefore, vary in length and format. Depending on your needs, delivery centres can offer intensive courses or a series of learning events over a period of weeks. Whatever the timescale, all learning programmes should include the following phases:

  • An induction to the qualification and your programme of learning and assessment.
  • A learning programme which meets your needs, focussing on the theory and practice of coaching hockey.
  • A programme of assessment, spread throughout the course, including observations of your coaching by an appropriately qualified assessor.

At the end of the programme, you will be provided with formal feedback on your performance and an action plan for your further development.

What will my assessment involve?

The L3CCH assessment will require you to:

  • complete tasks based on the role of a Level 3 coach, identifying participants’ needs and performance profiling
  • plan a hockey coaching programme.
  • plan 20 hockey coaching sessions within the programme
  • produce a coaching log and evaluations
  • produce risk assessments for all venues used during the qualification
  • be observed on two occasions managing a safe coaching environment; this will be observed and assessed by an appropriately qualified assessor
  • demonstrate improving team and individual performance
  • monitor and evaluate at least three individual players
  • monitor and evaluate a team on at least three occasions
  • produce evidence of continued personal development (CPD) and action planning
  • deliver two planned 90-minute hockey coaching sessions
  • produce evidence of self-evaluation.

Where can I access the qualification?

The qualification is delivered by 1st4sport Qualifications’ recognised centres, not all of which offer open courses to members of the public. Your first port of call to access a course should be the appropriate governing body of sport. Contact details are provided below.

How much will the qualification cost me?

Recognised centres offering this qualification determine their own fees and they will vary from centre to centre. The fees charged should entitle you to a programme of learning and assessment, registration and certification for the qualification, a 1st4sport Qualifications Learner Pack and an appropriate learning resource. For further information on the costs of courses, please contact a recognised centre.

Opportunities for funding may be available via a recognised centre, if you are eligible.
