Coaching Judo

Overview

The 1st4sport Level 2 Certificate in Coaching Judo (QCF) (L2CCJQ) is awarded by 1st4sport Qualifications and has been developed in partnership with the National Source Group for Judo. This qualification is not available in Scotland, although an equivalent version will be available from the Scottish Qualifications Authority (SQA).

The 1st4sport Level 2 Certificate in Coaching Judo (QCF) is regulated at Level 2 on the Qualifications and Credit Framework (QCF) and forms part of judo’s UK Coaching Certificate (UKCC) endorsed coach education programme. Criteria

If you are an adult (over 18 years of age) with a minimum of a BJA Grade 1st Kyu (Brown Belt) or BJA-recognised equivalent, and you would like to develop and improve your coaching skills, then the 1st4sport Level 2 Certificate in Coaching Judo (QCF) is designed for you.
NB: Prior to claiming for certification, you must certificate. This should be evidenced through a certificate of attendance on a ‘Safeguarding and Protecting Children’ workshop, and the emergency aid certificate itself.

Why Study?

It forms part of a structured and progressive programme of sports coaching and other related qualifications, offering you access and involvement in introducing others to the sport of judo.

What can I use it for?

  • To gain paid or unpaid employment as a judo coach.
  • As part of the development of a credible CV for employment in the sport and recreation industry.

Outline

On successful completion of the 1st4sport Level 2 Certificate in Coaching Judo (QCF), you should be able to:

  • understand the role of a coach
  • understand the coaching process
  • understand participants’ learning styles
  • understand behaviour management
  • understand how to reflect on a coaching session
  • understand the principles of planning coaching sessions
  • understand the principles of skill development through coaching sessions
  • understand how the stages of participants’ development impact on their coaching
  • understand the principles of evaluation in coaching
  • understand basic nutrition and hydration principles for sports performance
  • understand physical conditioning for sport
  • understand principles of mental preparation in sport
  • understand how to support participant awareness of drugs in sport
  • understand how to ensure participants’ safety during sport-specific coaching sessions
  • understand how to ensure equitable coaching of sport-specific activities
  • review participants’ needs for a series of judo coaching sessions
  • produce a series of judo coaching session plans
  • plan the evaluation of a series of judo coaching sessions
  • prepare resources for judo coaching sessions
  • assess and minimise risks before judo coaching sessions
  • establish and maintain working relationships
  • safeguard and protect children and vulnerable adults
  • prepare participants for judo coaching sessions
  • deliver judo coaching sessions
  • develop participants’ judo performance
  • conclude judo coaching sessions
  • evaluate judo players’ performance
  • evaluate judo coaching sessions
  • evaluate and develop your own judo coaching practice.

How will my learning programme be structured?

Learning programmes are usually designed by the recognised centre that delivers the qualification. They may, therefore, vary in length and format. Depending on your needs, delivery centres can offer intensive courses or a series of learning events over a period of weeks. Whatever the timescale, all learning programmes should include the following phases:

  • an induction to the qualification and your programme of learning and assessment
  • a learning programme that meets your needs, focusing on the theory and practice of coaching judo
  • a programme of assessment, spread throughout the course, including observations of your coaching by an appropriately qualified assessor.

At the end of the programme, you will be provided with formal feedback on your performance and an action plan for your further development.

Assessment

The 1st4sport Level 2 Certificate in Coaching Judo (QCF) assessment will require you to:

  • develop a personal coaching philosophy and code of conduct
  • complete a task about dealing with accidents, illness and emergencies
  • produce an outline plan for a series of six linked judo coaching sessions, including individual session plans and evaluation forms
  • produce individual plans of delivery for six judo coaching sessions
  • produce two risk assessments
  • produce a coaching log of sessions delivered
  • deliver and evaluate a further two judo coaching sessions that will be observed and assessed by an appropriately qualified assessor.

Fees

Recognised centres offering this qualification determine their own fees, and they will vary from centre to centre. The fees charged should entitle you to a programme of learning and assessment, registration and certification for the qualification, a 1st4sport Learner Pack and an appropriate learning resource. Opportunities for funding may be available via a recognised centre, if you are eligible.

The qualification is delivered by 1st4sport recognised centres, not all of which offer open courses to members of the public. Your first port of call to access a course should be the appropriate governing body of sport.
