Overview
The L1CCTEN is awarded by 1st4sport Qualifications and has been developed in partnership with the National Source Group for Tennis, made up of representatives from the Lawn Tennis Association (LTA), Tennis Scotland, Tennis Wales and the British Tennis Coaches Association (BTCA). This qualification is not available in Scotland, although an equivalent version will be available from the Scottish Qualifications Authority (SQA).
The L1CCTEN is accredited at Level 1 on the National Qualifications Framework and will form part of the National Source Group for Tennis’ UK Coaching Certificate (UKCC) endorsed coach education programme. Criteria
The L1CCTEN is designed for adults (over 17 years of age) who are looking for an introduction to working with grass-roots/juniors or for parents of children who want to get more involved.If you are a student in further or higher education studying a sports-related qualification, you might also wish to pursue this vocational qualification as the first rung on the coaching ladder.
Why Study?
- To help young people develop their hockey skills correctly at an early age.
- To get onto the first rung of the ladder for coaching hockey.
What can I use it for?
- Successful learners are eligible to seek employment in appropriate paid or voluntary tennis coaching assistant roles. Opportunities may include coaching in club and school environments, or the equivalent.
- Holders of this certificate may wish to gather further evidence to achieve a Level 1 N/SVQ in Sport and Recreation.
- As part of the development of a credible CV for employment in the sport and recreation industry.
- As a stepping-stone to the 1st4sport Qualifications Level 2 Certificate in Coaching Tennis (L2CCTEN).
Outline
Your learning programme will develop your understanding of:
- safety and ethics in tennis
- how to plan tennis coaching sessions
- how to deliver effective tennis coaching sessions
- how to review your performance as a coach and seek further development opportunities.
How will my learning programme be structured?
The recognised centre that delivers the qualification usually designs the learning programme. This may, therefore, vary in length and format. Depending on your needs, centres can offer intensive courses or a series of learning events over a number of days or weekends. Whatever the timescale, all learning programmes should include the following phases:
- An induction to the qualification and your programme of learning and assessment.
- A learning programme that meets your needs.
- A programme of assessment, spread throughout the course, including observations of your coaching by an appropriately qualified assessor.
At the end of the programme, you will be provided with formal feedback on your performance and an action plan for your further development.
Assessment
The following methods will be used to assess you for the L1CCTEN:
- Observation of performance – planning and leading activities within tennis coaching sessions.
- Tasks that take the form of assignments/project work to cover the breadth of the Theoretical Syllabus.
- Written questioning of your knowledge and understanding via a multiple-choice assessment paper.
Fees
Recognised centres offering this qualification determine their own fees and they will vary from centre to centre. The fees charged should entitle you to a programme of learning and assessment, registration and certification for the qualification, a 1st4sport Qualifications Learner Pack and an appropriate learning resource. Opportunities for funding may be available via a recognised centre, if you are eligible.

The qualification is delivered by 1st4sport Qualifications’ recognised centres, not all of which offer open courses to members of the public. Your first port of call to access a course should be the appropriate governing body of sport (GBSs).
