Overview

The 1st4sport Level 1 Award in Coaching Rugby League (QCF) is awarded by 1st4sport Qualifications and has been developed in partnership with the National Source Group for Rugby League (RFL). This qualification is not available in Scotland, although an equivalent version will be available from the Scottish Qualifications Authority (SQA).

The 1st4sport Level 1 Award in Coaching Rugby League (QCF) is regulated at Level 1 on the Qualifications and Credit Framework (QCF) and forms part of rugby league’s UK Coaching Certificate (UKCC) endorsed coach education programme. Criteria

The 1st4sport Level 1 Award in Coaching Rugby League (QCF) is designed for adults (over 16 years of age) who are looking for an introduction to working with groups of adults or junior rugby league teams, or for parents of children in junior rugby league teams who want to get more involved.
Students in further or higher education studying a sports-related qualification might also wish to pursue this vocational qualification as the first rung on the coaching ladder.

Why Study?

  • To help both adults and young people develop their rugby league skills correctly and safely.
  • To get onto the first rung of the ladder for coaching rugby league.

What can I use it for?

  • Successful learners are eligible to seek employment in appropriate paid or voluntary rugby league coaching assistant roles. Opportunities may include coaching in club and school environments, or the equivalent.
  • Holders of this Award may wish to gather further evidence to achieve the 1st4sport Level 1 NVQ Award in Sport and Active Leisure.
  • You can use it as part of the development of a credible CV for employment in the sport, recreation and allied occupations industry.
  • You can also use it as a stepping stone to the 1st4sport Level 2 Certificate in Coaching Rugby League (QCF).

Outline

On successful completion of the 1st4sport Level 1 Award in Coaching Rugby League (QCF), you should:
  • know how to establish and maintain an effective, fair and equitable coaching environment
  • understand the principles of coaching
  • know how to establish and maintain a safe coaching environment
  • understand how to, and be able to, plan rugby league coaching activities
  • understand how to, and be able to, plan for a safe rugby league coaching environment
  • understand how to, and be able to, prepare facilities and equipment for rugby league coaching activities
  • understand how to prepare participants for coaching activities
  • understand how to, and be able to, conduct planned rugby league coaching activities
  • understand how to, and be able to, support players’ behaviour and performance
  • understand how to, and be able to, conclude rugby league coaching activities
  • understand how to, and be able to, evaluate rugby league coaching activities
  • understand how to, and be able to, develop own rugby league coaching practice.

How will my learning programme be structured?

The centre that delivers the qualification usually designs the learning programme. This may, therefore, vary in length and format. Depending on your needs, centres can offer intensive courses or a series of learning events over a number of days or weekends. Whatever the timescale, all learning programmes should include the following phases:
  • an induction to the qualification and your programme of learning and assessment
  • a learning programme that meets your needs
  • a programme of assessment spread throughout the course, including observations of your coaching by an appropriately qualified assessor.

At the end of the programme, you will be provided with formal feedback on your performance and an action plan for your further development.

Assessment

The 1st4sport Level 1 Award in Coaching Rugby League (QCF)assessment will require you to:

  • be observed and assessed on the planning, delivery and review of coaching activities
  • answer written and oral questions on aspects of your performance, knowledge and understanding.

Fees

Recognised centres offering this qualification determine their own fees and they will vary from centre to centre. The fees charged should entitle you to a programme of learning and assessment, registration and certification for the qualification, a 1st4sport Qualifications Learner Pack and an appropriate learning resource.
