Overview

The 1st4sport Level 1 Award in Coaching Judo (QCF) (L1ACJQ) is awarded by 1st4sport Qualifications and has been developed in partnership with the National Source Group for Judo. This qualification is not available in Scotland, although an equivalent version will be available from the Scottish Qualifications Authority (SQA).

The 1st4sport Level 1 Award in Coaching Judo (QCF) is regulated at Level 1 on the Qualifications and Credit Framework (QCF) and forms part of judo’s UK Coaching Certificate (UKCC) endorsed coach education programme. Criteria

If you are over 17 years of age, have a minimum of a BJA 2nd Kyu (Blue Belt) or BJA-recognised equivalent, and you would like to develop and improve your judo coaching skills, then the 1st4sport Level 1 Award in Coaching Judo (QCF) is designed for you.

Why Study?

It forms part of a structured and progressive programme of sports coaching and other related qualifications, offering you access and involvement in introducing others to the sport of judo.

What can I use the 1st4sport Level 1 Award in Coaching Judo (QCF) for?

  • To gain paid or unpaid employment as an assistant judo coach.
  • As part of the development of a credible CV for employment in the sport and recreation industry.
  • As a stepping stone to the 1st4sport Level 2 Certificate in Coaching Judo (QCF) (L2CCJQ).

Outline

On successful completion of the 1st4sport Level 1 Award in Coaching Judo (QCF), you should:

  • know how to establish and maintain an effective, fair and equitable coaching environment
  • understand the principles of coaching
  • know how to establish and maintain a safe coaching environment
  • understand how to, and be able to, plan judo coaching activities
  • understand how to, and be able to, plan for a safe judo coaching environment
  • understand how to, and be able to, prepare facilities and equipment for judo coaching activities
  • understand how to prepare participants for judo coaching activities and support participants’ behaviour and performance
  • understand how to, and be able to, conduct planned judo coaching activities
  • understand how to support participants’ behaviour and performance
  • understand how to, and be able to, conclude coaching activities
  • understand how to, and be able to, evaluate coaching activities
  • understand how to, and be able to, develop your own coaching practice.

How will my learning programme be structured?

Learning programmes are usually designed by the recognised centre that delivers the qualification. They may, therefore, vary in length and format. Depending on your needs, delivery centres can offer intensive courses, or a series of learning events, over a period of weeks. Whatever the timescale, all learning programmes should include the following phases:

  • an induction to the qualification and your programme of learning and assessment
  • a learning programme that meets your needs, focusing on the theory and practice of coaching judo
  • a programme of assessment, spread throughout the course, including observations of your coaching by an appropriately qualified assessor.

At the end of the programme, you will be provided with formal feedback on your performance and an action plan for your further development.

Assessment

The 1st4sport Level 1 Award in Coaching Judo (QCF) assessment will require you to:

  • complete a series of tasks on accidents, illness and emergencies, the role of the coach and participant welfare
  • produce four plans to deliver judo coaching activities
  • deliver and evaluate four activity sessions in your club that are witnessed by an appropriate mentor
  • deliver one of the four planned activities in a simulated environment, which will be observed and assessed by an appropriately qualified independent assessor
  • evaluate the judo coaching activity you have planned and delivered.

Fees

Recognised centres offering this qualification determine their own fees, and they will vary from centre to centre. The fees charged should entitle you to a programme of learning and assessment, registration and certification for the qualification, a 1st4sport Learner Pack and an appropriate learning resource. Opportunities for funding may be available via a recognised centre, if you are eligible.
