1st4sport Level 1 Award in Coaching Basketball (QCF)

The 1st4sport Level 1 Award in Coaching Basketball (QCF) is awarded by 1st4sport Qualifications and has been developed in partnership with the National Source Group for Basketball, which is composed of members from the home country national governing bodies: England Basketball, basketballscotland, Basketball Wales and the Great Britain Wheelchair Basketball Association. This qualification is not available in Scotland, although an equivalent version will be available from the Scottish Qualifications Authority (SQA).

The 1st4sport Level 1 Award in Coaching Basketball (QCF)is accredited at Level 1 on the Qualifications and Credit Framework and will form part of basketball’s UK Coaching Certificate (UKCC) endorsed coach education programme. Is the 1st4sport Level 1 Award in Coaching Basketball (QCF) for me?

The 1st4sport Level 1 Award in Coaching Basketball (QCF)is designed for adults (over 16 years of age) who are looking for an introduction to working with grass-roots/junior basketball players, or for parents of young basketball players who want to get more involved.

Students in further or higher education, studying a sports-related qualification, might also wish to pursue this vocational qualification as the first rung on the coaching ladder.

Why should I study the 1st4sport Level 1 Award in Coaching Basketball (QCF)?

  • To help young people develop their basketball skills correctly at an early age.
  • To get on to the first rung of the ladder for coaching basketball.

What can I use the 1st4sport Level 1 Award in Coaching Basketball (QCF) for?

  • Successful learners are eligible to seek employment in appropriate paid or voluntary basketball coaching assistant roles. Opportunities may include coaching in club and school environments, or the equivalent.
  • Holders of this Award may wish to gather further evidence to achieve a Level 1 N/SVQ in Sport, Recreation and Allied Occupations.
  • As part of the development of a credible CV for employment in the sport, recreation and allied occupations industry.
  • As a stepping-stone to the 1st4sport Level 2 Certificate in Coaching Basketball (QCF).

What will I learn?

Your learning programme will develop your understanding of:

  • establishing and maintaining an effective, fair and equitable coaching environment
  • the principles of coaching
  • establishing and maintaining a safe coaching environment
  • planning coaching activities
  • planning for a safe coaching environment
  • preparing facilities and equipment for coaching activities
  • preparing participants for coaching activities
  • conducting planned coaching activities
  • supporting participants’ behaviour and performance
  • concluding coaching activities
  • evaluating coaching activities
  • developing your coaching practice.

How will my learning programme be structured?

The recognised centre that delivers the qualification usually designs the learning programme. This may, therefore, vary in length and format. Depending on your needs, centres can offer intensive courses or a series of learning events over a number of days or weekends. Whatever the timescale, all learning programmes should include the following phases:

  • an induction to the qualification and your programme of learning and assessment
  • a learning programme that meets your needs
  • a programme of assessment spread throughout the course, including observations of your coaching by an appropriately qualified assessor.

At the end of the programme, you will be provided with formal feedback on your performance and an action plan for your further development.

What will my assessment involve?

The 1st4sport Level 1 Award in Coaching Basketball (QCF)assessment will require you to:

  • have an appropriate understanding of the Level 1 knowledge units and the specific technical knowledge underpinning the coaching of basketball, which will be assessed via performance, simulation, tasks and assignments
  • produce an individual session plan for a 15-minute coaching activity in basketball; the activity must be drawn from the Level 1 Basketball Technical Syllabus
  • produce a written risk assessment for the coaching venue used during the coaching of the above activity
  • produce a written evaluation of the above activity
  • have been observed delivering a basketball coaching activity by an appropriately qualified assessor. This session may be simulated and delivered on the course of training. An individual session plan, risk assessment and evaluation should be produced for the activity
  • complete a written exam paper.

How much will the qualification cost me?

Recognised centres offering this qualification determine their own fees and they will vary from centre to centre. The fees charged should entitle you to a programme of learning and assessment, registration and certification for the qualification, a 1st4sport Qualifications Learner Pack and appropriate learning resource. For further information on the costs of courses, please contact a recognised centre. Opportunities for funding may be available via a recognised centre, if eligible.

What do I do next?

The qualification is delivered by 1st4sport Qualifications’ recognised centres, not all of whom offer open courses to members of the public. Your first port of call to access a course should be to contact the appropriate national governing body of sport.
