Learn4Work partnership

Recognised centre

The Learn4Work team has been part of the learning division in Stoke-on-Trent for 12 years and its mission is: ‘to provide high quality opportunities to enrich local people’s lives, improve their skills, knowledge and job prospects.’

As a work-based training provider, it works in partnership with the city council, as well as other local authorities, and sporting organisations including the Staffordshire Football Association and Stoke City Football Club.

Background

Duncan Gilchrist is the Learn4Work Team Manager, and he started looking for coaching awards to contribute to their Activity Leadership Apprenticeships. ‘We used to use awards in leisure settings, but wanted to move into coaching to meet potential employers’ requirements,’ he explains.

Why 1st4sport Qualifications works for Learn4Work

Having worked with 1st4sport Qualifications previously with other awards, they were the natural choice for Learn4Work, and Duncan selected the qualifications in the 1st4sport Principles of Coaching Sport Suite (QCF):

The qualifications were perfect for Duncan as they provided his learners with the opportunity to develop their confidence in coaching (by giving them the basic coaching knowledge) before they decided to progress on to a sport-specific coaching qualification.

Duncan found the process to become approved to deliver the qualifications was very robust, as he feels it should be, but at the same time very straightforward. And he has found working with 1st4sport Qualifications to be problem-free. As he says: ‘They are switched on to our needs, which makes them very responsive.’

Results

Duncan is very pleased with the impact the qualifications have had. The learners find them very useful, and most importantly, they lead to employment opportunities, for example, as community sports coaches. Some learners use the qualifications as a pathway into higher education and progress in that respect.

‘The 1st4sport Principles of Coaching Sport Suite (QCF) has been an excellent addition to the portfolio of qualifications we offer. The qualifications have been first class in helping our learners develop their skills and knowledge for working in their coaching positions. The supporting Tutor, Assessor and Verifier Guidance Packs were particularly helpful when we were implementing them.’
